Often when folks find out I am an archeologist they say Oh I took a class in that but then my mom said you can’t get a job in that. So I went on to be a doctor... or lawyer. Well I am here to tell you all your mothers lied! In fact I have recently been getting quite a few emails begging for archeology fieldworkers. If you have taken the Grandad archeological field school you basically have your union card. Calling all Grandaders! If you are looking for work send me a message for more information. I will also tell you there is a huge shortage of Masters level Archeologists right now, but there is work for you even with a BA! . . . #archeology #archaeologyjobs #archaeology #jobs #grandad #employment #crmarchaeology #csufresno #csufanthropology #fssocialsciences See more

I had quite an adventure this weekend. I got to volunteer for my first cremains recovery. A lovely 86 year old lady not only lost her cabin in the Creek Fire sh...e lost the cremains of her husband of 63 years. This is another great example of applying archaeological techniques to solve real world problems. The problem is that if not recovered these remains go to a toxic waste dump - which is heart breaking to the survivors. Our successful recovery was in no small part to a wonderful sniffer dog who lead us right to the spot of the remains. I have been rather skeptical of sniffer dogs over the years but man this really made me a believer. It was very heartwarming to reunite these high school sweethearts! Being able to apply your skills to help others is what makes life good. I look forward to sharing this experience with my students. . . . #appliedarchaeology #cremains #cremainsrecovery #snifferdog #creekfire #heartwarming #csufresno #csufanthropology #fssocialsciences #altaheritage See more

Collage of Social Science put up a picture of me as a young hippie archeologist as part of their Day of Giving. However, there is an even earlier telling pictur...e of me. I am ten years old and was camping through Europe with my family in the 1960s. This trip exposed me to Roman and Greek sites that stirred an interest in archaeology within me. This picture is of me drawing the ruins at Olympia in Greece. My parents were amazing folks that gave me this wondrous opportunity that truly changed my life and for that I will always be grateful. I am here today teaching archaeology because of the seeds they planted. . . . #fresnostatedog #dayofgiving #fsdayofgiving #grandad #plantaseed #beginings #csufanthropology #csufresno #fssocialsciences #greece #ruins #archaeology See more

What a wonderful talk by Chris Velez at the Fresno Country Archaeological Society. He shared the insights he has gained from California basket weavers and how t...hey managed natural resources. He told of how he views land holdings that have archaeological sites but today are missing the plant resources that would have been there. Through cleansing fires original plant communities can return long dormant. . . . #sierrafoothillconservancy #fcas #landtrust #landconservation #californiaindians #archeology #archaeology #restoretheland #csufresno #csufanthropology #fssocialsciences See more

I find myself traveling from Powwow to Gathering to Powwow. Part of what I always do is work on building in relationships between the tribes and CSU-Fresno, pla...nt seeds that they are welcome at the University and should go there. At Tachi I spent a fair amount of time talking about the Gaylen Lee Memorial Fund and my vision of how I want it to make a real difference in the lives of tribal youth. Just as important I was listening and gathering ideas on how the funds should be spent and how we can reduce the barriers for Native Americans following their dreams of higher education. It was wonderful to see us so well represented by our outreach coordinator and here helpers at the CSU Fresno table! She does such a great job! . . . #tachi #traditionalgathering #outreach #highereducation #tribalyouth #buildingconnections #makingadifference #memorialfund #csufresno #csufanthropology #fssocialsciences See more
