What do you do in DAR?

Our chapter participated in a Patriot Scavenger Hunt via Zoom as part of our monthly meeting and had a great time! Daughters were given the list in advance to gather the items. As the instructions indicate, we pulled the descriptions one at a time and the first to get to 10 won! It was great fun to see everyone's items, and even after the winner was announced several continued to share about some of the interesting items that weren't pulled. This definitely got our ladies participating and engaged! Congratulations to winner Barbara Volker! #TodaysDAR #RiseAndShineforAmerica #America250!

Here’s a great idea for our Centennial Celebration!

Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday and official day of service observed each year on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the United States. MLK Day is a day on, not a day off, and the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities, much like the DAR Day of Service which is observed each year on October 11. The image below, "The Stone Of Hope" memorial by master sculptor Lei Yixin was opened to the public in West Potomac Park, Washington DC, on August 22, 2011.

I applaud the National Park Service for continuing the tradition of honoring the October 19, 1781, victory at Yorktown with annual ceremonies which first bega...n in 1909. Although yesterday’s events were reduced from those of prior years, a respectful service was conducted at the magnificent monument here that recalls the significance of this final major battle of the American Revolution. (Participants were socially distanced and wore masks removing them only briefly for photos.) It was a picture perfect autumn day, and I express my sincere appreciation to the Virginia Daughters, especially State Regent LeAnn Turbyfill and those of the local Compte De Grasse Chapter, who own and operate the 1721 Custom House in this historic community, for their exceptional hospitality. It was a special treat to meet and pose with representatives of the French Army, who take part annually in order to honor their forebears in the victory. We later enjoyed lunch and a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution here I highly recommend it! Here is a short video of the Yorktown ceremony: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&v=sRvOuJCgTnw See more

Did you know that October has been nationally designated as Family History Month since 2001? (It seems so appropriate, given that our National Society was found...ed on October 11, 1890!) Thank you for honoring the Revolutionary War Patriots in your family through your membership in Today's DAR. In honor of this month of celebrating family, I share the names of those Patriots whom I have so far documented: Jacob Plattner, Marcus Plattner and Simon Freer, all from New York. Who are the Revolutionary War Patriots in YOUR family tree, and where did they serve? See more

Our Day of Service project was to begin preparing the Ditty Bag contents for our Veteran’s Holiday gifts. Today we made several hundred sets of Christmas cards and whimsical patriotic cork reindeer! I am a school district administrator, and have a schedule that allows for limited opportunities to visit classrooms. Of course COVID, and our district's 20,000+ students learning remotely makes that even more challenging! However, I have always managed to get into a few classrooms and read a story about the Constitution to elementary students to recognize Constitution Day. This year, I decided to write my own eBook to read virtually. I joined a third grade class this morning and shared my book. They were so interested! So engaged! And, so appreciative! The hours I spent preparing it were a drop in the bucket compared to the joy the students shared with me this morning. #ConstitutionDay #StudentsMadeMyDay #TodaysDAR

Friday, September 11th, 2020 marks the 19 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning. By a joint resolution approved 12/18/2001, (Public Law 107-89) has designated September 11th of each year as "Patriot Day" which also directs the flags be lowered to half-staff for the entire day on September 11.
