A Big Thank You to Danny for raising $500 that he donated to the K-9 unit! What an amazing gift! Both the dogs and handlers really appreciated it! Looks like we have a future handler! Thanks again!

Hey friends! We just wanted to take a second to say thank you to all of you for your continued support of our Unit. We love the reactions we get on social media from all of you about our K-9s, handlers, training, and educational posts. We have the best community! We do have an announcement! Tomorrow, September 28, 2020, Sgt. Szatmari will be joining the K-9 and Mounted Patrol Units and taking over social media for both units. Thank you to everyone who has supported us, li...ked our posts and videos, become our friends, participated in things like our community questions and design contests, and sent emails or letters (or packages!) letting us know how much you love these very special K-9 teams. It has been a huge honor to be a part of this Unit and I know they will continue to do amazing work in our community! Get ready for a great week! ~Sgt. Beckford

Not only are we walking closer to the weekend, but the air quality has improved and the forecast is under 90 almost all week. Things are looking up! Although we work on a variety of skills throughout the week, obedience training is never over for our teams! We added in extra temptation with a decoy wandering around during the exercises, or even leaning over the dogs. Exercises like these ensure the dogs focus on their handlers regardless of what else is around. Now back to those weekend plans.. stay safe and healthy friends!

Let’s keep this week going with another Community Question! We were asked where our K-9s are from and if they are trained before they come to the Department. Here’s an answer from Officer Loy: The Fresno Police Department currently has 12 K-9s. Our dogs primarily originally come from different regions of Europe, because the dogs are bred to be working dogs. That term refers to dogs who are trained specifically to be law enforcement and military working dogs. The dogs ar...e then imported by a vendor into the US and later go to different departments. Here are examples of some of the countries our K-9 partners were originally from: Germany -Zeke Holland -Stark -Gunner -Zeus -Diezel Ukraine -Argo Czech Republic -Odin -Major -Kilo Slovakia -Jax -Flash Our dogs come to us with a wide range of basic training. Basic training includes things such as obedience and sometimes work on a jute bite sleeve. There are times that we receive what we call green dogs, meaning they haven’t yet received any type of training. Regardless of what kind of training the dogs have or haven’t had, we like to start with foundational obedience work prior to the dogs starting any training such as searching buildings or open areas, and detection work (narcotics and explosive). Pictures: Officer Loy’s partner, Major. (We know there are only 11 dogs listed, stay tuned to our page for a special announcement!)

It’s Monday! Why not start off the week with another Community Question? We were asked if we find the general public is scared of our K-9s because of their looks or appearances. Here’s an answer from Officer Anderson: Most people are not afraid of our K-9 partners. They are intrigued by their attractive coats, athletic build, and alert demeanors. The community members always have questions about our K-9's, which we are happy to answer. ... Would you believe the top question we get from the community is Can I pet your dog? (Pro tip: The answer is usually yes!) As a unit, we love when we have the chance to talk about what we do and interact with our community because of the dogs. We might be biased, but we think our K-9s are pretty handsome Picture: Officer Anderson’s partner, Diezel.

Who else is ready to jump into the weekend? Argo tried his best to keep his eyes on the decoy hidden inside of the bus during training. Using different areas like buses help our teams navigate narrow spaces and different obstacles. We know it’s been a difficult time for our community, so we hope this made you smile! Thank you to our friends at Fresno EOC for letting us use their facility for training!

We thought everyone might need something to smile about today.. Stark decided he could wear the suit better than we could at training last night! Our hearts are with everyone affected by the Creek Fire and all of the first responders who are helping with evacuations and trying to get the fire under control. Our handlers have also been going up to assist on their days off. We know several communities throughout the state are fighting the same battle and our thoughts are with you. Stay safe and stay strong!
