The yellow marker in this photo from a few years ago marks a salmon nest that was underwater (as it needs to be) hours before the photo was taken. The US Burea...u of Reclamation, which operates Shasta Dam, greatly reduced water releases from the dam, which dewatered this nest (or redd). This dries out and kills all the incubating salmon eggs buried in the gravel. In the last 24 hours the Bureau has dropped Shasta releases by more than 15 percent with more cut backs to come. This year, few salmon were expected to spawn in the upper Sacramento, an unwanted relic of the last drought. We can't afford to lose them. Why is the Bureau killing our salmon? See more
