Part 2 of FPBA’s Women's History Month video series is here! Mothers are one of the first women to influence our lives, and we heard it loud and clear from the women featured this week. FPBA employees Abby Farrell, Ann Shelton, Karen Fletcher and Orange Buensuceso reflect on what it means to be a woman, accomplishments, role models and more. Who is your role model? https://youtu.be/ZsdrnrWIAQY
Sorrento Therapeutics is developing a neutralizing antibody to combat variant strains of COVID-19. We are proud to see one of our clients making a difference by leading the charge to get in front of the COVID-19 variant instead of chasing it. https://www.nbcsandiego.com//san-diego-therapeuti/2544332/

Pacira Biosciences, Inc. recently relocated its R&D and pilot-scale manufacturing functions to an existing building in Torrey Pines. Having designed the original shell, FPBA partnered with Pacira to provide a multi-phased, full-building tenant improvement. "FPBA has provided PACIRA essential architectural and construction support services for our new R&D / Clinical Clean Room Suites / Administration building to support our mission in San Diego to support our ongoing productio...n for EXPAREL and our future products," said Ryan Shore, Exec. Director Engineering & Facilities of Pacira. FPBA alongside BNBuilders, Randall Lamb, Coffman Engineers and others worked with Pacira to navigate the hurdles of delivering a project in the COVID era. Our new building TI was designed and built during one of the most complex execution timelines in recent history due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shore said. We were able to keep our construction timeline and move our teams in on time which allowed us to keep our real estate and business interests aligned and on target through the pandemic. We are thrilled to support Pacira in its growth and in its mission to provide non-opioid options for managing pain. Read more at http://fpbarch.com/portfolio/pacira-biosciences-inc/
It’s exciting to see progress underway at Muse at Torrey Pines, with the installation of new building skins. This $100 million redevelopment will offer flexible lab and office space within a three-building campus, located at 3030, 3040 and 3050 Science Park Road. Reimagined by The RMR Group and Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects, the project is undergoing a full redevelopment of both the interiors and exteriors featuring dramatic new landscaping and exterior gathering areas, state-of-the-art laboratory interior spaces and upgraded mechanical systems. https://www.businesswire.com//RMR-Group-Announces-Progress
We’re in the midst of National Library Weekand it’s also World Book Day! While we may not be able to gather in our favorite library, we wanted to celebrate with a Q&A featuring three of FPBA’s library design experts: Amanda Schultz, Ann Shelton and Michael Wilson. Check out what they have to say on what it’s like to design a library, and where library design is going. http://fpbarch.com/celebrating-national-library-week-qa-wi/
We’re celebrating #earthday2020 with five uplifting facts about the environment resulting from stay-at-home orders around the world. 1. Many global cities have seen unprecedented reductions in deadly particle pollution. Close to home in Los Angeles, the city experienced a 51% reduction in PM2.5 between March 23 - April 13 compared to the prior 4-year average. 2. Many urban cycling networks have seen a surge in traffic, including in China, Germany, Ireland, the UK and the US. ...In Philadelphia, cycling has increased by more than 150% during the COVID-19 outbreak. 3. In a recent Gallup poll, 62% of employed Americans said they were working from home. Of those, 59% said they would prefer to keep working remotely if allowed by their employers once things return to normal. This brings hope for a continued reduction in air pollution even after restrictions are lifted. 4. From goats in Wales to raccoons in Panama, wild animals all over the world are roaming the streets of now-vacant cities. Meanwhile, two pandas mated in a Hong Kong zoo for the first time, where scientists have been trying to breed them for 10 years. 5. Many investment funds set up with environmental, social and governance criteria (ESG) are outperforming the broader market during the coronavirus crisis.
Great video from BNBuilders, FPBA’s recent building partner on a two-floor lab renovation at UC San Diego's Muir Hall. A lab tenant improvement is different from a lot of other renovation projects. There’s a lot of coordination with the detailed components that you wouldn’t have to do if you were doing a typical office, said Craig Horwat, the Project Architect for FPBA. Working within an occupied building, the team used laser scanning to coordinate utilities and configure the space in the virtual world before building it out.
Gilead Sciences is ramping up manufacturing at its La Verne site to help address COVID-19. Designed by FPBA and CE&IC, the facility has been filling vials of remdesivirup to 25,000 vials every other daysince mid-February to support clinical studies and emergency use protocols for those in critical condition. Gilead opened the La Verne site in 2017 with state-of-the-art equipment and automation which along with the team’s experience building out and running the facility ...was helpful in preparing the site to quickly pivot to remdesivir manufacturing, says Richard Aman, Senior Director of the Project Management Office in La Verne. FPBA is proud to partner with clients like Gilead who make a difference in this world. https://www.gilead.com//ramping-up-manufacturing-to-help-a
It’s always exciting to see a recently completed project from bird’s eye view. Check out the NuVasive Experience Center, an expansion to NuVasive's global headquarters in Sorrento Valley. In addition to housing the surgeon experience center, the three-story ground-up building houses product display, offices and an expansive indoor-outdoor event space. FPBA is thrilled to continue working with NuVasive, Healthpeak Properties, Inc. and Project Management Advisors, Inc. on additional site and exterior modifications. https://vimeo.com/404793201
Here’s a bit of uplifting news for the day. Two of our clients, Gilead Sciences and Genentech, are making headway on COVID-19 treatments with several ongoing clinical trials. Gilead’s remdesivir and Genentech’s Actemra, or tocilizumab, are existing drugs now being tested for their potential to treat COVID-19. Some of Gilead’s trials are expected to start data readouts by early April.

A new research campus is brewing on Science Center Drive. Known as The Boardwalk, this 195,000 SF complex will unify three buildings with a wooden circulation path that gives the campus its name. A full-service restaurant, one-acre park and expansive conference center are just some of the amenities to be offered by The Boardwalk. We look forward to seeing this project come to life as we celebrate the groundbreaking this Thursday with Healthpeak Properties, Inc., Project Management Advisors, Inc., Swinerton Builders and CBRE. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com//now-building-164m-li

FPBA recently hosted our annual autumn food drive for the San Diego Food Bank! Our goal this year was to bring in 1,000 pounds of food, and we did it! Our 1,152 pounds will provide 960 meals for those in need. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed!
Why wait until #GivingTuesday to kick off the charitable season? FPBA-ers secured their hard hats and fastened their tool belts this past Saturday for a build day in Logan Heights with San Diego Habitat for Humanity. Tasked with various projects from grading to blocking to grouting, it was a memorable day of learning, team building, and hard work!
