Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmiths was a significant exhibition for the Fowler Museum, earning honors and accolades as one of the best exhibitions of 2018. After its successful international tour and return, conservation of the forged iron objects continues. Next Monday, 5/10, join Head of Conservation Christian de Brer for a presentation on the role of the Fowler Museum’s Conservation Department in preparing for the exhibition and donation, with a focus on stabilizing and treating the objects for display, travel, and long-term storage. De Brer will also address unique issues related to works in iron, such as weight, corrosion, and past use. RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/152581875497

"Fowler Museum Director Marla C. Berns, a scholar of African art, and museum curator Erica P. Jones are leading a seven-person team tracing provenance, or the history of ownership, of works in the enormous Wellcome gift. So far, midway through a 3 year research initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation, six objects lead straight to the Benin palace attack. In an interview, Berns, said the Fowler and other American museums, spearheaded by the Smithsonian, have been discussing the creation of a working group to navigate the complicated process of repatriation of the stolen art. The Linares Studio in Mexico made the calaca (papier-mâché skeleton) totally ubiquitous. Turns out the link between Linares Studio cartonerías (papier-mâché sculpture) and Self-Help Graphics & Art’s annual Día de los Muertos calacas workshops goes way back to the 80s, and fueled the Golden era of East LA skeletons! Tune in today at 5pm PDT to get into the spirit of the Day of the Dead with Self-Help Graphics & Art’s teaching artist William Acedo and Norma and Edgar C...oronado, who learned the craft from Acedo and mastered it themselves! If you have any questions about our Make Your Own ‘Calaca’ workshop, this is also your time to ask the artists directly! Since 1993, the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program has been diversifying the staff of museums and visual arts organizations through paid internships for students from underrepresented backgrounds. The initiative has introduced 3,200+ interns to arts careers at 175 LA-based arts institutions. We are proud partners of this program, having welcomed and supervised #GettyMarrow interns at the Fowler. A new report looks at the impact of this program, now the longest-standing diversity internship program in the visual arts in the U.S.
Who were the Wellcome Staff responsible for cataloging and caring for Wellcome’s collection? Sona Rosa Burstein received her postgraduate diploma in anthropology from Oxford in 1928 and worked at the Wellcome Institute from 1928 to 1957. As head of the Ethnography department, Burstein led a team of researchers to catalog objects and prepare exhibitions for Wellcome’s museum. In her reports, Burstein often remarked on the necessity of correcting incorrect or incomplete records, she also suggested new procedures for cataloging objects. Burstein published her own research on folklore and gerontology, and she was president of the British Folklore Society from 1956 to 1959.
