We have new additions! Meet our Blue Polish Chicks. They are Karen, Susan, and Carole baskin, and Joe (we think one might be a rooster)
We have a den of San Joaquin kit foxes that live across the street in the field!! We have heard them on occasion in the distance calling out for one another at night. But nothing like what occurred last night... Yesterday the farmer harvested the field and our little fox friends where not happy. Around 3am I was awoken to a what I thought at first was the neighbors dog. It wasn’t. The den of foxes where very close to the house and they were not happy. Howling, screeching, a... yapping sound was all coming from the field, and they where closer then normal. Sounds like it might be a issue? NOPE! We are blessed to have these little friends. They are endangered and only about 7000 of them exist. They are about 20 inches long (minus the tail) and weight 4-5 pounds! Their mating season is Dec-March. So we are at the end. Most are fatting up now to have their babies in 48-52 days. They pray on California ground squirrels, white-footed mice, kangaroo rats, pocket mice, San Joaquin antelope squirrels, black-tailed hares, desert cottontails, ground-nesting birds, chukar, and insects. Some vegetation, mostly grass, is also eaten. Their life expectancy is 7 or 8 years in the wild. We feel really blessed to have such beautiful creations living so near!
