Rotary Meeting - June 17th This week's Rotary speaker is Matt Jacobs. Matt has served as Kaiser Permanente's Community and Government Relations Manager since 2011. He is responsible for outreach and communications for the San Mateo Service Area, encompassing the South San Francisco and Redwood City medical centers. He manages local governmental affairs on behalf of Kaiser and lobbies on key legislation. ... Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Matt was Chief of Staff for the County of San Mateo's Office of the Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2011. Matt earned his Masters degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan in 2005 and a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis. Matt will speak to us on what Kaiser Permanente is doing in the community, and will answer questions about COVID-19 as well. Rotary Club Meeting - June 10 This week's Rotary speaker is Leslie Frates. Leslie won $56,099 as a 5 day winner on the television game show Jeopardy! in February 1991, and went on to compete in the "Tournament of Champions" in November 1991, winning another $5,000. She won $25,000 in Jeopardy Million Dollar Masters Tournament at Radio City Music Hall in New York (Semi-finalist) in May 2002, and participated in the "Ultimate Tournament of Champions," February 2005, and "80...'s Battle of the Decades Tournament," February 2014. Leslie was born in Oakland and grew up in Hayward, graduating from Mt. Eden High School as Valedictorian. She earned her B.A. in Spanish from Cal State Hayward and an M.A. in Spanish from UC Berkeley. Leslie was a Spanish instructor at Chabot College from 1981-1998, and Spanish lecturer for Cal State Hayward from 1992-2009. She is fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Latin and a smidgen of German. Her hobbies include counted cross-stitch embroidery, crossword puzzles, playing recorder, and singing. Leslie lives in Hayward with her husband of 39 years, and has been a rabid Jeopardy fan since 1964. Leslie will take us through her backstage experience as a Jeopardy! competitor and let us in on some of her secrets of competing. Rotary Club Meeting - June 3rd This week's speaker is Joe La Mariana, Executive Director of Rethink Waste, and President-Elect Nominee of the Rotary Club of Burlingame! Joe La Mariana joined the RethinkWaste staff in August 2016 after serving in local government for ten years as San Mateo County’s Solid Waste and Environmental Services Manager. Before working at the County, Joe worked for over 13 years in the local solid waste industry’s private sector, including assignment...s as the Recycling Director for Republic Services (formerly known as BFI/Allied Waste) at the San Carlos Shoreway Environmental Center, and in regional management positions with Recology (SF) and Waste Management Inc. (East Bay). Prior to the solid waste industry, Joe worked for 13 years in corporate communications and marketing. Joe has extensively volunteered with the Rotary Club of Burlingame, the Burlingame and Brisbane Chambers of Commerce, and the City of Burlingame’s Parks and Rec Commission.
