Fun facts 1943 Sept. 8, 1943 Superintendent James W. Lilley, of the Caspar Lumber Company, recently discovered, or re-discovered, the old landmark back of Caspar known as Great Caspar. This landmark was installed in 1878 and was used then and ever since as a triangulation point by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. It was originally constituted by sawing off a small redwood tree, on top of which a glass cylinder was placed, acting as a reflector and this was sur...rounded by a framework or staging. As time went on, the staging caught fire and the upper part of the tree was destroyed. Government officials then sawed the tree off about four feet above the ground and inserted an iron bolt in the center of the stump, on which they erected signal flags. To perpetuate this, they sunk in the ground, surrounding this tree, suitable cement markers, three of which are capped with bronze inscription plates. The elevation of this monument is 1,053 feet.
