Do I Really Have a Phobia? By: Michael J. Perrotti, PhD. Many patients present with symptoms of a phobia, eg, fear of driving the freeways. Much time is spent in therapy with the focus of treatment being the phobia. However, the central problem may not well be a phobia. It may lie with suppressing powerful emotions such as anger. Suppressing our emotions in lieu of expressing them does not make the problem go away. When we suppress painful emotions such as anger, our feeli...ngs accumulate within us much as water does when filling a bathtub. This in turn creates tremulousness and anxiety which in turn can lead to phobias. This writer has found positive outcomes with patients with this problem by involving them in expressive therapy where they are taught to excavate and express previously suppressed emotions. In many of these cases, patients go on to experience an improved quality of life free of fear-restricting emotions. The goal is to teach patients to connect with these feelings and safely express them in a therapeutic environment. If you are faced with highly anxiety provoking situations, seek the assistance of a clinical psychologist experienced in expressive therapy we can be of assistance. One can then move from a fear-restricted life to an eventually emboldening life. Fight on! Stay strong! Be positive! See more
