Yesterday we went out and gave our usual delivery of food but this week, we took it a step further and began implementing a new project. In order to help keep t...he people clean and safe during COVID and to improve where the city has failed, we constructed a portable handwashing station. We held a small meeting with residents of the encampment and workshopped how to construct the handwashing station. We had it built and operating in a matter of 10 minutes. We will now be crafting more of these hand washers and sharing this skill with other encampments across Victorville. The City was likely embarrassed that we called them out at their council meetings, and in response, has decided to add bathrooms and handwashing stations to some encampments. However, from our time feeding the houseless we know that they have forgotten and ignored numerous encampments. Furthemore, the city can take these bathrooms and sanitation stations away at a whim as they have done in the past. They feel no obligation to help their houseless residents. Any state that disregards the safety and will of its people will always be against the people. As such, we will continue to build these stations and build other DIY projects to help the encampments across the desert. Stay tuned for more updates and projects. On this day exactly 100 years ago, 8 February 1921, Peter Kropotkin, famous proponent of anarchist-communism, died of pneumonia in Russia. In his life he founde...d and participated in revolutionary groups in Russia, England, France and Switzerland, and wrote many key texts in the development of anarchist theory. These included Mutual Aid: a Factor in Evolution, which showed how cooperation was a key factor for any successful species, and Fields, Factories and Workshops: a practical model on how a free society, run by the working class, could function. Works by and about him available here in our online store: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com//books/peter-kropotkin See more
