Greetings food-tarians, I'm curious to know if there is a local group currently working on a campaign to encourage Humboldt county to opt in on the newly passed law called AB626. It allows food (beyond what's defined by CA Cottage Food Law) to be prepared and sold from home. In many ways, it would allow talented food producers to get ahead before investing in opening a food business. The overhead needed to operate a tiny food business (such as mine) outweighs the traditionall...y low profit margins of food sales. Without a sort of grace period to work out the kinks in a business model, a small business owner is likely buried in debt before financial success has a chance to peak. On the other hand, county officials are not funded to mitigate what they envision as a sanitation nightmare. I'm positive that there is a solution or two worth trying. See more

This article highlights the dilemma of food wasting away in a field. There are hungry people in Fresno (yeah, the irony is ridiculous) and farmers can't afford the labor it costs to harvest their leftovers. Food is not simple. It's costly, especially when you can't sell it or access it.
