Custom pepper mills done and off to their recipients! These take a fair bit of work to make well, so it’s always satisfying to finish them up and see the final product. Made of rock maple.

Finished up a custom order of 19 bottle openers in apricot wood today and thought I’d share with you! These are going to be part of the employee Christmas gifts at a local office. I’ve never had the chance to work with apricot wood before and I really enjoyed it. Wood from stone fruit trees like apricot, cherry- and yes, my favorite, olive- tends to be pretty hard, prone to cracking as it dries, and takes an incredibly smooth finish when sanded. That’s what woodworkers refer to when we say a wood machines well. This apricot certainly didn’t disappoint, and look at all the gorgeous colors it shows! I can’t wait for these to go to their new homes!

After making these little wooden mice, I did a little photoshoot of them for my shop. My wife said, "Hey! You should make a stop motion video of them!" and here we are... may I present to you "A Mischief of Mice, Part 1"

With all the turmoil in the world this year, I just haven't felt terribly creative since about February, and have only been out photographing once or twice since then. But last week when I heard the Perseid meteor shower was going to peak that night, I gathered up my gear at the last minute and headed out to Bass Lake, and I'm glad I did. I forget how calming and anxiety-busting standing quietly under the stars, listening to the summer cicadas and feeling the cool breeze come... in can be. This image is a composite of about 2-3 hours' worth of data I gathered that night. I took more than three hundred images in 15 second intervals, and then when I got home I went through and gathered up the best meteors I had captured and collated them into one base image. I saw some really amazing green fireballs, but the most impressive ones I witnessed tended to be right overhead, far out of the line of sight of my camera frame. Oh, well- I still had a good night out and captured a few good shooting stars.

First frame complete! And hung with one of my very first linocut prints, to boot! This is the finished product from the video I took of making the half-lap joints on the table saw. The wood is mahogany, reclaimed from luthiers’ offcuts- it’s simply gorgeous wood. The linocut block print is a craft I’ve always wanted to do but never got around to. And then I saw @molipolaprints beautiful work and it inspired me to give it a try; turns out I absolutely love it! New craft addic...tion, yay!!! I have *so much* to learn about both framing and block printing, but like my photography, I think the fun is all in the learning and experimenting, so I’m looking forward to more. Already have an oak and a birch frame in process; will probably put some of my photography work in those, but the satiny orange tones of the mahogany cried out for this deep blue ink! . . . . #makersgonnamake #maker #woodworkprojects #pictureframe #pictureframes #woodworking #woodwork #foggymoggy #artandcraft #craftsman #craftnotcrap #linocut #linoprint #lino #linocutprint #printmaking #print #printmakersofinstagram #inkprint #speedballart #speedball #handmade #handmadecrafts #handcrafted #imadethis @speedball_art

Back in the shop for the first time in a while- decided to build frames for my artwork. Shot this quick little video of how I make half-lap joints on the table saw. The wood is mahogany, reclaimed from a luthier’s shop. Stay tuned for the finished product in a few days!

Rainbow Fire In the morning, when you stand at just the right angle, you get to witness this amazing rainbow coming off of Yosemite Falls. I decided to frame it between the curve of the trees and the curve of the rock, and saw that occasionally the wind would push the water into a shape that echoed the frame. It looked like a flame of fire to me. I must’ve taken over a hundred clicks in order to find this one that I was happiest with. This was taken during the amazing Out of Yosemite conference put on by the wonderful folks at Out of Chicago Photography - if you’ve ever considered taking a photography workshop or going to a conference, I can’t recommend them highly enough! I was fortunate enough to be taught by Charlotte Gibb Photography and Michael Shainblum Photography during this particular field session!

I spent time making test prints yesterday of a few photos that I’d made in Yosemite while there for my photography conference. Printing my work has become a vital part of my process; it makes it really real, and brings my vision out into the world, and being able to hold that in my hands means something deeply to me. This print is titled The Pregnant Pause Before the Falls. I took it the evening before the conference began, and I was so amped up and ready to go, electric wit...h anticipation, and then I got out to Ahwahnee Meadow and saw the Falls all moonlit, and just stopped in my tracks, and breathed and rested in that moment. The moon was near-to-full, and her delicate glow stunned me, and slowed me down and brought me fully to attention, seeing the scene before me and experiencing the depth of the darkness and the inspiration of the soft light. I knew the next day would bring exciting things at the conference, but seeing this sight and feeling this peace helped me to come back to myself and breathe fully as I watched the light play on the water. I just got home from an absolutely amazing photography workshop in Yosemite, put on by Out of Chicago Photography. This was one of the best weeks of my adult life; I had so much fun, I learned so much, and being there with so many creative folks and absorbing so many new viewpoints and ways of making photographic art really changed me and my outlook on my own photography. So much so that I made a blog post about it- maybe my first(?) http://www.foggymoggy.com//Musings-From-B...ehind-the-Camera-1 I really wanted to thank the amazing instructors who particularly really helped me, in no particular order because they were all amazing: Colleen Miniuk, John Sexton, Charlotte Gibb, Matt Payne, Franka Gabler, Jack Curran, Michael Frye, Harold Davis, and Jen King. Thank you for sharing your love and knowledge and encouraging us all to go deeper. The photo is titled "New Growth"- it was one of the last photos I took as I was leaving the Valley after the conference. The metaphor is obvious, of course, but the sentiment still valid.

BOING! I'm not set up with the gear for serious wildlife photography, so this is cropped from a wider shot with the longest lens I own. But I really wanted to share that moment of pounce with you all. Taken in Yosemite's Cooks Meadow a week ago after the big snow; it was a good day to be a coyote, and a bad day to be a meadow mouse!

My posts recently have been either nighttime, monochrome, cold, or moody. So here’s something warm and bright. This was the scene yesterday morning at the Shinzen Friendship Garden, in Woodward Park in Fresno. The Ume blossoms are beginning; Spring is coming to the Central Valley soon!

Lonely Tree on the Moor, California Central Valley On a foggy, overcast day I went to a local wildlife refuge to try my hand at some bird photos. Turns out I’m not much of a bird photographer, but I did see this lonely tree, solitary and moody, out on the heath.
