Fall Fishing // This is the time of year that many of us look forward to. It's no secret that Fall in Northern California presents some of the best fishing opportunities of the year. Whether it be trout or steelhead fishing, there are some excellent opportunities to get out on the water with a fly rod from now until the end of the year. October is traditionally a popular month but the fishing doesn't slow down in November or December. Those of you that have fished on the "Lo...wer Sac" with us in the Fall know just how sweet the fishing can be. We have quite a few Salmon starting to cut redds and lay eggs in the Redding and Anderson stretches. This natural occurring process makes for some exceptional trout and Steelhead fishing in October, November and December. The smorgasbord of food created from these spawning salmon put the trout on the feed and they can gain quite the girth by November. We have also been frequenting the "Lower reaches" (below Anderson) and finding a good number of Steelhead in the system already. We are expecting more steelhead to keep showing up down there as we get into November. These lower floats can be a great option in November. When we're trout fishing and we run into a few large, hard fighting steelhead it can be quite the cherry on top. Both the Trinity and Klamath boast some of the healthiest populations of Steelhead in the world. November and December can be two of the best months to visit these rivers. Both of these venues are already seeing fish in the stretches we target which is a great sign for November and December fishing! The Fall colors mixed with strong, hard fishing steelhead is a superb combination. These are two of our favorite small streams to fish in the Fall and early end of Winter. The "October Caddis" hatch should be changed to the "November Caddis" hatch because this hatch usually peaks in November. Fishing on both of these rivers can be great as the temperature begin to cool. The McCloud closes to all fishing on November 15. The days leading up to this closure can produce some very good trout fishing with a shot at a large brown trout being very realistic. The Upper Sac is open all year. See more

This notice just came out tonight from the Yuba water district Because of the current historic electrical grid demands the lower Yuba river flows will be increasing 1000cfs / 200cfs per hour to a target flow of 2640cfs starting tomorrow 8/18/20 . The flows will hold at 2640 cfs until Friday 8/21/20. At that time the flows will ramp down at 200 cfs per day to approximately 1640 cfs on or about 8/26/20. Lower Sac - The "Sac" has dropped to 10k cubes over the past few days. This is a great Summer flow for us. The upper reaches in the Redding area have given up some very large fish over the past week. Fishing has been good up in town but not necessarily wide open. Fish are eating a variety of bugs, from Caddis to Mayflies, Stoneflies, Midges, etc. No specific hatch or bug has really stood out recently.. What has stood out though is the condition of the trout. A lot of the fish... in the upper reaches are in as good of shape and as heavy as we've ever seen. This is great news for the coming weeks and months as the arrival of spawning salmon in the river will only contribute to their size. We're looking forward to seeing what the coming few weeks have in store. The Lower River (below Anderson) has been a great option as well. Expect good numbers of fish down low but expect them to be a bit smaller on average than the fish in the upper reaches. There have been a few Steelhead around in the lower river as well. September can be the best sleeper months of the year on the Lower Sac.. Fall River - The Fall has been FANTASTIC this summer and has shown no signs of slowing down. The quality and the quantity of the fish in the system this year has been special. Expect this to remain a great option through September. Feeding those beautiful wild fish in clear water is a hell of a lot of fun. McCloud River - The McCloud is in it's late summer mood.. fishing early and late has been best. Finding shade in the middle of the day can be key. Those bigger brown trout migrating up-river from lake Shasta can be a real treat to run into.. From now through Fall is the time of year to run into one of these badass critters. There aren't many better places to wet wade on a hot Summer day.. Pit River - The 'ol trusty Pit remains another good option this time of year. If you have an above average wading game and can get to some of the tougher to access water, you can have a very good time fooling those plump, pit river rainbows. Wet wading here is a always a good option this time of year. Upper Sac - The Upper Sac has been a good option early and late in the day as well. @acflyfishing
