This one was for my patient last week who has been suffering from severe dental anxiety for many years. On the day of his appointment, he surprised me with requesting to try without meds and without nitrous (I was just proud of him for showing up to his appointment) but guess what... he took a huge step forward in taking back some control over his fears and completed his treatment without a hitch. An article from the New York Times came out a few days ago about the alarming increased rate of patients coming into the dental office with #crackedteeth. Our office has also seen an increase in cracked teeth, broken fillings, as well as discomfort due to TMJ-related issues including muscle pains and headaches ever since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past couple of months we have seen catastrophic fractures on virgin teeth (which is rare!) and lots of requests ...for nightguard fabrication . So what’s going on? Is everyone chewing on ice or something these days? Well, probably not. Actually most people who have come into the office, did not have a single isolated event to cause the crack. It was more like, I was just eating bread or I don’t remember biting on anything hard at all. Changes in our environment and increased levels of stress can lead to actual physical manifestations within our bodies. Unfortunately, for many this has presented in the form of clenching & grinding of the teeth. So if you haven’t had a recent dental checkup, maybe today is the day to make sure your oral health is in a good place.
