The Sufferings of Jesus of Nazareth: One Very Long Day - Mark 15 - Rev. Dr. Shane Kinnison - 3/21/21

First Baptist Church of Glendale 27.04.2021

March 18, 2021 The Executive Committee and member clergy of the Glendale Religious Leaders Association stand in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the face of increasing and senseless violent attacks perpetrated upon them throughout the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 in the United States. Most specifically, we stand in solidarity, support, and sorrow for the eight victims of gun violence in the larger Atlanta area who were shot and killed ...by a lone, white, young attacker. We decry the pervasive hostility and prejudiced attitudes toward the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities that have led to actions of intimidation, injury, harm, and death. We stand and speak against the political, public, and private voices that have given rise to and permission for such hate and violence toward people who are unfairly and unjustly targeted as being baselessly responsible for the global pandemic. We recognize the ancient sacred teachings of the power of words to produce both life and death and we shine the light of truth and righteousness upon the darkness of evil and deadly words that result in actions of destruction. We stand in support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities who have survived generations of prejudice and discrimination in our nation. From abuses incurred by the Chinese in the expansion of the West, by the Japanese exiled to internment camps during World War II, by the multitudes who migrated to the United States across the decades of the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and beyond, we recognize the struggles and hardships amplified and multiplied by systemic racism. We further recognize the generational and current sexual exploitation of many whose lives are permanently damaged and deeply scarred in our nation’s all-pervasive sex trafficking and sex industry. We are particularly compelled to stand in solidarity and support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities because of our own local generational Glendale story. We recognize the collective history of Glendale and the many decades when Asian persons and populations were disallowed from residing in our city unless they were domestics and lived in the houses of their employers. While this will forever be a part of Glendale’s past, we stand today to speak and act in ways that promote unity, respect, fairness, and equality with and for all people who call Glendale home. Therefore, we urge religious leaders, houses of worship and communities of faith, city officials and broad-based community leaders to stand and speak in support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities; to stand and speak against racism, prejudice, discrimination, and violence; and to stand, speak and act in ways that promote unity in diversity, fairness and equity, and justice in Glendale. Admitting, Acknowledging and Apologizing are critical first steps in leaving behind a dark past while moving toward a bright future. First Baptist Church has been in Glendale since the inception of the city. Now, we are privileged to be a part of a community where we can work with all partners of goodwill who are committed to justice, equality, fairness and unity for all people who call Glendale home.

#throwbackthursday to last February when our incredibly talented worship pastor Dr. John Simons prepared and instructed the choir during dress rehearsal for our annual gospel music concert in honor of Black History Month. We look forward to the day when our seats are full once more! #church #gospelmusic #architecture #glendale
