As the fourth child of 9 children, my lolo, Magtangol Satingin Palma, was born in Tansangluma, Cavite, Philippines. He grew up in a poor family, taking on unfathomable responsibilities as a very young child. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, he lived alone in a nipa hut from the ages of 11 to 15 tending to the carabao and selling their milk in order to help support his family. While in high school, my lolo continued to support his family by working in the str...eets, selling pandesal and working as a product carrier on the pier. Magtangol, in English, means shield or to defend, and he served as the sergeant of arms and battalion commander of his high school class. He married my Lola, Adoracion Topacio Palma, when he was 19 and worked as a police officer with the Cavite City Police Force for 12 hours a day for 4 years straight until he was recruited at the Sanglipong Navy Base and joined the United States Navy in 1958. He worked hard, relegated to work as a cook, living from ship to ship, traveling the world while building and raising a family of his own. My Lolo’s first taste of America was at sea, working on a ship stationed in Anapolis, Maryland and then Norfolk, Virginia, and every 6 months, for 2 years, he would be stationed in Europe, living off cities in Spain, Italy and France. He finally made his way back to the Philippines in 1962, stationed in Subic Bay for four years. And then from 1965 to 1978, he worked off the Pacific Coast, first in Vallejo, then Alameda, San Diego, Coronado and finally, Lemoore, California. My lolo retired proudly from the Navy after 20 years and settled in Union City, California and the rest is history in the making. Happiest Veteran’s Day to my Lolo! It’s been a long time challenge to love my body, especially postpartum. I looked at myself in the mirror last night and 19 months later my belly rolls, blatant asymmetry, and unseen but totally experienced incontinence is still in tact. But when I remind myself that I come from the earth and that the earth is inside of me, my divinity peaks through. And if its possible to love myself a little bit more, I pray that we all are open to receive this reminder of love through {our}... nature: that we are made of nature and nature is inside of each of us. If I am inherently worthy, we all are worthy beyond measure. Free yourself from critical thoughts your body and your spirit are worthy of your grace. How to make sense of this moment? This photo of the sun and its reflection was captured yesterday morning through our double pane kitchen window the AQI was 244. With raging fires across the Pacific West Coast, civil uprising in a crucial and contentious U.S. election year and a worldwide pandemic that does not cease to divide us, last Thursday’s apocalyptic darkness felt eerily on time. And now as the smokey air’s wrath sucks on my already dry skin, I can feel Mother Earth’...s cries to Mother Nature’s fury: How can we learn and move from this evolutionary moment for the better? While the new normal is indefinite uncertainty, seeing the reality of our sun’s shadow gives me courage and hope for a revolutionary future. I don’t want things to go back to normal, I want people to wake up, stay up, and rise up. I want humanity to regenerate and reclaim these challenging moments as an unraveling of our truth. And even if our truths are made up of chaos, crisis and conflict, they are also made up of collective anger, pain and sadness. Which to me, means that we and the world we live in need healing. Healing in this moment and in all the moments that we, as Humans and Beings are collectively experiencing and sharing. If all of this is the new normal, what sense are you making of this moment? I will re-member this moment of the red sun and the sun’s mirror in the smoke-filled sky and I will effort to evolve with them on purpose. I’ll grow deeper and breathe deeper in the knowing that while moments like this are only temporary, memories live on generationally. The question then now is not how can I make sense of this moment, but how can I (co)create the memories from this moment that offer my descendants the opportunity to thrive? How am I contributing to this moment in a lovingly meaningful and impactful way? What do I need to let go of in order to receive the message of this moment right now? This past week has really been about rooting down and looking inward, receiving nourishment from the ground beneath me with a hopeful perseverance. From this place, I can faithfully grow with an awareness that holds space for the reality of the people and communities I serve. And it is by surrendering into this truth, I am open to share my power and privilege to bloom amidst the uncertainty and challenge. I woke up this morning in a tender place. I was supposed to be on my way to Seattle this morning to attend the Fourth Annual @pinaypowerhouse Conference: Dare to Reign hosted by my sisters-in-law @filipinolawyersofwa but then #covid_19 came into our lives and postponed this special weekend. So I found myself at my altar inhaling the spaciousness I’ve been able to cultivate lately and exhaling solidarity with our sisterhood, our collective, and felt the Movement deep within me. I keep thinking about how timely this scare of an inevitable spread is at least for those of us who are fortunate enough to have the resources and abilityto practice breath, to deeply reflect, and to inhabit our capacity to practice social spaciousness while striving for social solidarity. It takes a village, and since some of us are lucky enough to have a village, let’s be proactively positive about the ways we can contribute to collective humanity during this challenging ...time of certain uncertainty and mass fear. At the beginning of 2020, my words were Breath, Depth and Spaciousness. I felt drawn into the soul of these words. The leadership it took for me to sit with and still into the spirit of what it means for me to actually live into these words. When Luca and I first came down with Influenza A in January and then we got sick yet again in February, I was forced to space myself away from my work and community learning to mother in this way and gratefully relying on my village to take care of us too. It was a unique experience for me, but now I’m seeing this experience as a timely allusion into the viral pandemic of now. Fittingly, these words of spacial solidarity came to me in my meditation this morning. I feel so blessed to be able to meditate while my husband is at work and my parents are taking care of Luca downstairs while so many in the world right now are struggling to survive, unequipped with the resources and capacity to do more than live on a day by day basis. Access to healthcare, housing, food, and justice are human needs and rights that have always existed pre #covid_19 and now more than ever. We are now in a state of crisis and finding a way to be consciously and contagiously calm so that our loved ones and community around us can feel it too is a real privilege to me. One that I don’t take lightly and one that I encourage us, in the ways that we are able, to devote ourselves to. So if this message resonates, my request of you is to take the time (if you are able and willing) to really breathe, dig deeper and practice spacial solidarity, humanity needs you to, here’s your opportunity. #startism #breathingluv #spacialsolidarity See more

My Valentines Love & LUV This is my third solo trip away from my baby, and each time, feels harder than the last. This morning I found myself crying in the car after waving goodbye to Luca at his daycare. Maybe it’s because he’s getting older? More expressive? More aware. I’m also stepping into mamahood much more intimately, with more depth as each day is lived. And as I continue to watch him grow, the more badly I feel about leaving him. But I also know it’s important for me to grow too. I am grateful to my hubby @savasmusic for taking care of our baby while I’m at the capital defense seminar in San Diego. He even managed to find the time to surprise me with a vday gift before I left the house.
