Happy 150th Anniversary Yosemite! "Yosemite Park is a place of rest, a refuge from the roar and dust and weary, nervous, wasting work of the lowlands, in which ...one gains the advantages of both solitude and society." -John Muir On this day 150 years ago, President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act, setting aside Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove for the public's use and enjoyment. Mount Starr King at Sunset "Love of nature has its root in wonder and veneration, and it issues in many forms of practical good. There can be no abounding and a...rdent patriotism where sacred attachment to the scenery of our civil home is wanting." Thomas Starr King was a Unitarian minister as well as a nature writer and a very popular lecturer. He climbed mountains and loved nature, but his first visit to Yosemite Valley in 1860 was transformative. His experience there led to his becoming a public voice for the protection of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees. The treasures of Yosemite, he said, should be public property, not to be lavished upon a few for personal gain He preferred to be called by his middle name, Starr. Thus the 9,092-foot-high mountain dome named after him is called Mount Starr King. King died in 1864, just a few months after President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant into law.
