The only shortcut is hard work. Monday April 5th, 2021 marks a new chapter for Pooler Fire-Rescue as 16 recruits start their arduous journey to becoming Pooler ...Firefighters. Two groups consisting of 3 lateral (certified Firefighter/EMTs or higher) and 13 entry-level (uncertified or limited certification) will begin their respective training programs consisting of 6 to 22 weeks of training. While its certain that there are organizations with harder training programs across the country, our standard is one of, if not the most difficult training program in the region. Our firefighters learn not only state and national standards for fire and EMS certification but endure a grueling 6-8 additional week training program consisting of organizational standards that encompass many industry-wide best practices. There is no shortcut in our training program, there is only hard work. In order to complete the academy and become a full member of Pooler Fire-Rescue, every firefighter is required to complete a 2436-hour final comprehensive skills assessment designed to see if they can adapt to work under pressure and fatigue in a variety of scenarios that they will encounter throughout their careers. The unfortunate reality is that through the course of this training, we will lose one or more recruits because they were not physically or mentally prepared for the rigors that they will endure. However, we owe it not only to the citizens and visitors of Pooler, but our mutual and automatic-aid partners to prepare our firefighters for any emergency that may come our way. Good luck gentlemen, we do wish you the best, but know that the finish line has been set, it is up to you to cross it. See more
