For those of you with young or almost adults at home: it's important to know that once they turn 18, they are legally considered adults. This means that they have to give you permission to manage their health and finances in case of an emergency. We've created a Fledgling Plan to help you prepare for this!

Do you hire independent contractors? Due to new more stringent laws on classifying workers, you could face thousands of dollars in penalties and fines. It would be safer to only hire business entities as independent contractors (not humans!). If you have someone that you often hire and classify as an independent contractor-- tell them that they need to incorporate their business if they want you to hire them again. Incorporation protects them and their business as well as clarifying the relationship for both of you. Send them to Fine Point Law -- we love helping start-ups form a strong legal foundation.

If Prop 19 has negatively affected your family there might be hope. As you know, Prop 19 is now in effect, however, a new Senate bill announced 3-2-21 (SB 668) would temporarily delay the implementation of Prop 19 as to parent-child transfers. This would give parents time to plan for the change and give the BOE time to clarify ambiguities in the law. For seniors planning on moving to a new home, don't worry, SB 668 will NOT affect the base year value transfer provisions that become operative on April 1, 2021. What can you do? Prop 19 Update! After much harassing by yours truly, I finally have something in writing from the Board of Equalization confirming that a "family farm" need not have a residence on it. This should be a huge relief to my many clients with large ranches/farms that include several adjoining parcels.
