Happy Halloween Nerd Post. Troll 9 episode series about a Troll and his therapy sessions. Where: @fxxnetwork @hulu . ... Part of the @cakefx series. Favorite elements of this project: Makeup. Holy lord, what a miracle @pauljonesfx pulled off. I am always concerned when shooting something that relies heavily on makeup effects. You never know how it will come out and I was unsure how much I might have to compensate for skin detail and reflectivity, prosthetic edges, etc. When I saw what Paul had done that first morning, my mind was blown. I poked around with my naked eye and couldn’t find any seams or flaws. He had taken Alex and created a whole new, living creature. It meant I didn’t have to play it safe at all with the shooting and lighting. I could shoot Troll like I would any other character. Performance. When Alex was fully in makeup (sweating his ass off, I might add) and that accent came on, I completely forgot it was him. It was a delight just watching him work and the on screen chemistry between him and @therealnancylenehan was undeniable. What is ultimately a simple series- two people sitting down and talking to one another- is carried by their performances. Frankie’s Production Design/ Art. It’s hard for me to believe, looking at the finished piece now, but that room was a white box before @francescampalombo got her hands on it. The final room exceeded all my expectations. We had talked about a warm, 70’s vibe to the space that leaned into browns & oranges so it would contrast with the Troll’s blueish-grey skin. We wanted him to naturally stand out from the background. Everything you see- including the walls- were brought in by her and her team. Great art design feels the same as a great location- When it works, I get giddy because I know my job is significantly easier.
