Today's #SundayFundayGroovesHome Edition features Brandon Coleman. Bending the future of sound, taking ivory and ebony to destinations unknown, is keyboard maestro, vocalist, composer, producer, arranger and astral traveler Brandon Coleman. A regular fixture with Babyface, Donald Glover, Flying Lotus, and Kamasi Washington’s band, Coleman represents a new chapter in the evolution of jazz and funk fusion. His celebrated sophomore album, Resistance, released in late 2018, brou...ght him All Around The World to Japan, South America, and Europe alongside Kamasi and traveling North America to support Flying Lotus, with his future funk band, Brandon Coleman’s SpaceTalker. For those accustomed to Coleman’s role laying the foundation for expansive spiritual-jazz explorations in Kamasi Washington’s band, it’s revelatory to hear him so spry on his feet and down to get down. If his work with Washington contains all the weight and gravitas of Sunday church, Coleman’s Resistance has all the fun, breeziness- and yes, sunlight- of an afternoon church picnic, said Andy Beta of Pitchfork. At a typical Brandon Coleman show, whether trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, septet or SpaceTalker, it’s common to get the entire Sunday extravaganza. Curated by Azul 213.

In honor of Dia de los Muertos, artist Dalila Paola Mendez in partnership with Self Help Graphics created this traditional altar, melding indigenous and Catholic traditions in a positive honoring of the dead. The layers of the altar are reflective of the elements --earth, water, fire. The altar includes photos of community members who have passed this year, including loved ones the artist personally knew as well as well-known public figures including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Kobe and Gianna Bryant, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Lewis. Our altar is on view through November 2.

Our Dia de Los Muertos altar by Dalila Paola Mendez in partnership with Self Help Graphics is on display through November 2. The tradition of El Dia de Los Muertos is rooted in the ancient Mexican belief that death is a positive part of the cycle of life. The ancients honored their deceased loved ones with a party, welcoming them home for a day. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought with them a Catholic day of remembering called All Saints Day. While the cu...stoms blended, today Day of the Dead remains rooted in the more playful Aztec traditions rather than the somber European view of death. Modern day Mexicans celebrate Day of the Dead by decorating altars (ofrendas) for their loved ones with photographs, mementos, fresh marigolds, sugar skulls (calavera) and skeletons, and platters of Day of the Dead bread (pan de muerto), corn, rice, and beans, as well as a variety of other food and drinks. The aroma of the cooking is hoped to help the departed find their way home for the party. Departed infants and children (angelitos, or little angels) are remembered on November 1, and departed adults on November 2. Open house parties begin the festivities, which end at the local cemetery where families gather at decorated gravestones with picnics, mariachis, and tequila.
