Asparagus season is upon us! We are grateful to partner with Durst Organic Growers via Capay Valley Farm Shop so we can distribute these tender shoots to our foodie community. So...why don’t we have asparagus more? What about artichokes!? Where are those? Well! Perennials (crops that return year after year) take a while to get established. On average, it takes 4 years, from seeding to eating, to cultivate asparagus. In many areas of California, in particular on our North Bay ...farms, the cost of setting aside enough land for perennials to be bountiful, and then to tend to these plants for multiple years before you can harvest is simply unthinkable. Imagine all the lettuce you could grow, all the mouths you could feed, and all the restaurants you could supply with annual crops in that time. Asparagus and artichokes aren’t necessarily out of the question, but we should consider these crops a delicacy, especially if grown hyper locally. What sacrifices are being made for crops like this to be reasonably priced at big box stores? Durst’s asparagus season is short and sweet and they’ve been in the asparagus game long enough to have it down. Let us delight in the ecstasy that is Northern California grown asparagus while we have it

A year later...thanks Press Democrat for shining a light on the challenges our farmers have faced and continue to face. Hear from FEED's Navigator, Tim Page, cooperative member Peter Buckley of Front Porch Farm and others on the state of the ongoing "pandemic pivot."
