Each year in November, the fire agencies of Ventura County hold a remembrance for firefighters who have lost their lives due to job related injuries and illnesses. This year due to COVID-19 we will not have a live, in-person service. Instead, we have shared a tribute video. Four firefighters are being added to the wall this year in memory of their service. Their family members and colleagues will provide testimony to their personal characteristics and professional dedication in this video.

Today kicks off our #FirePreventionWeek here on #NBVC! Throughout the week NBVC will be introducing our proud and hard-working Fire Prevention team. Life long ...resident of Ventura County and Fire Prevention Chief Marcela Martinez leads her team from the front here at NBVC Fire Prevention Team. With 25 years of service with the Federal Fire Department she has the experience to truly keep our Sailors and civilian counter parts safe. Chief Martinez and her team are in charge of inspecting roughly 12,000 buildings throughout the year to ensure codes are met which span across all three bases, Santa Cruze Island, and some portions of Camarillo. With a vast area of responsibility, Chief Martinez still finds time to help educate over 7,000 Sailors and civilian counter parts a year, to be a loving wife and mother to wonderful 5 kids and be an active part in our community. When asked why Chief Martinez picked the Fire Prevention team on NBVC she could not help but to get sentimental when talking about how she grew up seeing Fire Fighters and the Military as her heroes. Now after being a part of the team for 25 years Chief Martinez has gained her family away from home, as many of us can understand. With all the tedious hours devoted to sweat, passion and dedication, NBVC could not ask for a better Fire Prevention Chief to aid in keeping us safe. #FirePreventionSafetyTip from Chief Martinez: Ensure you have a working smoke detector and practice your evacuation plan!

Fire Prevention Inspector Veronica Mijaras was born and raised in Oxnard and has been a part of the #FirePrevention Team for 29 years here at #NBVC. With a fami...ly as big as her heart, Inspector Mijaras has 3 children, 2 grandbabies and a loving husband. Inspector Mijaras’ day starts with finding out the tasks required for the day which often includes inspecting one or more of the 400+ buildings she’s in charge of. Inspections include verifying the buildings are up to code, and if they are not then giving guidance on how to be code compliant, as well as checking portable fire extinguishers and checking fire alarm systems. Another big task, and some might argue the most important, is the training and education Inspector Mijaras and the team gives to over 7,000 Sailors and their civilian counter parts. When asked what her favorite part of her job was she recalled helping get an AFFF system installed that had been hindering a hangar on Point Mugu for a number of years. Once installed properly the hangar was finally allowed to return normal operations, and of course be code compliant. Retirement is around the corner for Inspector Mijaras who looks forward to relaxing and volunteering to educate the public on Fire Prevention in her off time. Big thank you to Inspector Mijaras! #FirePreventionSafetyTip from Inspector Mijaras: Verify your appliances work properly and are maintained properly, as well. Never skip on the Fall and Spring cleaning!

We continue our #FirePreventionWeek with Fire Prevention Inspector Veronica Vasquez! Born and raised in Ventura County this mother of a beautiful daughter conti...nues to excel here at #NBVC. With two years under her belt she has a lot learn but that doesn't stop her from leading. Inspector Vasquez inspects 400+ buildings yearly, which is only a fraction of the 12,000 buildings the Fire Prevention Team is in charge of. Inspections include verifying the buildings are up to code, and if they are not then giving guidance on how to be code compliant, as well as checking portable fire extinguishers and checking fire alarm systems. Another big task Inspector Vasquez has is the training and education to over 7,000 Sailors and their civilian counter parts. In Inspector Vasquez' off time she likes to go on adventures with her daughter. Thank you, Inspector! #HOOYAH #FirePreventionSafetyTip from Inspector Vasquez: "Lighters and matches are NOT toys! Also, once you get to safety from a structure fire, do NOT reenter the building. Wait for help to arrive."

The fourth and final member of our #FirePrevention Team is Fire Prevention Inspector Joel Rodriguez. Ventura County native, husband and father of three means In...spector Rodriguez is always active. Whether it’s practicing drills with his children at home, teaching the 7,000 Sailors and civilians on #NBVC, or doing his inspections on one or more of his 400 buildings, Inspector Rodriguez is a busy man with determination and purpose. In his two years here at NBVC Fire Prevention Team, Inspector Rodriguez has won the hearts of many and helped maintain the safety of all Sailors and staff aboard NBVC by putting in the hours, blood, sweat, and heart we need. When asked about his favorite part of being a Fire Prevention Inspector and why he chose it, Inspector Rodriguez said he wanted to show his children that you can be whoever you want to be regardless of age. For Inspector Rodriguez, his pride and joy in being an Inspector is helping prevent those mishaps which in turn saves the lives of those he cares about, his community. #FirePreventionSafetyTip from Inspector Rodriguez: When in doubt, just get out and always practice your evacuation plan!
