"When the board of the Fresno Housing Authority was debating a proposed 60-unit affordable housing project on Willow and Alluvial avenues in Clovis in March 2019, a commissioner opposed the plan, stating there are more, better areas for diversity and our residents to feel like they are in the right place. Commissioner Terra Brusseau cited concern about the impact on public transportation and local schools the children of the families would attend." https://www.fresnobee.com/fresnoland/article249689973.html

"Fresno County and neighboring counties in the central San Joaquin Valley inched closer Tuesday to breaking out of the state’s most-restrictive tier of COVID-19 business limitations. But despite two months of steady reductions in the number of new coronavirus cases arising each week, Fresno, Kings, Madera, Merced and Tulare counties all remained assigned to purple Tier 1 of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy by the state Department of Public Health." https://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article249806673.html

FCHIP stands alongside Healthy Fresno County in reminding the community that wearing a mask helps keep yourself and your community safe. #HealthyFresnoCounty Fresno County has been able make progress. Help us continue to stop the spread. ... "CDC recommends that everyone wear a mask over their nose and mouth when in public, including during travel. Masks slow the spread of COVID-19 because they help keep people who are infected from spreading respiratory droplets to others when they cough, sneeze, or talk."

Have you ever wanted to become certified in resilience-based, trauma-informed care? There is an opportunity for you on October 24th! More details and the eventbrite link below. "Becoming and maintaining a resilience-focused, trauma-informed organization is possible, even while COVID-19 is impacting your staff and clients. However, it isn’t a one-time implementation or the responsibility of a committee. It requires full support from your leadership, board of directors, and emp...loyees. It also requires ongoing communication and training. In this training you will not only gain knowledge, but also insight that leads to a paradigm shift. You will learn the N.E.A.R. science which includes neuroscience, epigenetics, ACEs, and resilience. You will learn how underlying needs are expressed by behavior and how to develop strategies to address behavior. Add this certification to your resume and also add this perspective to your life and all your relationships. This training is ideal for anyone who has a brain and interacts with other people who also have brains." Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/resilience-based-trauma-inform

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. What can you do today for the mental health of your community, your loved ones, and yourself? World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.... The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) says this: "This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods are threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye. The economic consequences of the pandemic are already being felt, as companies let staff go in an effort to save their businesses, or indeed shut down completely. Given past experience of emergencies, it is expected that the need for mental health and psychosocial support will substantially increase in the coming months and years. Investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels, which have already suffered from years of chronic underfunding, is now more important than it has ever been. This is why the goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign is increased investment in mental health." #HealthyFresnoCounty

Thank you Healthy Fresno County for this important video. "Wear a mask. Stay home when you are sick and social distance.... We Can All Make A Difference. We’re not past the virus. Make sure to wear a mask, wash your hands, and stand 6 feet apart to fight and stand up to it. Be safe now so we can truly restart the economy. The virus doesn’t care about politics or color, so be socially responsible and fight off the virus. It’s not about me or you it’s about the health of everybody. Do the right thing by staying 6 feet away from each other, wearing your mask, and staying in place as much as possible. We all have to work together to keep each other healthy and protect the community. Let’s respect each other and do the right thing." https://www.youtube.com/watch

As you know, September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness month. This year is a particular focus given the constellation of disasters we have been experiencing both nationally and locally and the impact on our collective mental health. A recent study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that 63% of young adults have experienced increased anxiety or depression related to COVID-19. One in four have used substances and one in four have considered suicide o...r had suicidal thoughts. We are very concerned about our youth as they are experiencing both social isolation as well as the impact of uncertainty about their future. We know that many kids and teens rely on social interaction, particularly that provided by school. We also know that, developmentally, youth have a difficult time dealing with uncertainty. The recent emergencies and disasters have created a great deal of uncertainty for our youth, whether it is, broadly, will this ever end? to when will I see my friends?, will I have a prom or graduation? to will my family be ok financially?: Locally, we are paying close attention to the volume of kids we are seeing in crisis, particularly with an increase in suicide attempts. The most important message we can give is for parents, friends, teachers, loved ones to CHECK IN with the kids in your lives. Pay attention to: Signs of anxiety or depression -Panic attacks -Anger -Loss of interest in usual activities -Significant change in behavior (+ or -) -New use of substances or increased use of substances -Talking about a loss of hope especially absolutes (this will never get better) -Or suicide What can you do??? Start the conversation! Don’t be afraid to ask them about their stress, their thoughts and their feelings. Don’t be afraid to ask about thoughts of suicide! Get help if they won’t talk to you or you continue with concerns. Help is available. We have a 24/7 access line for both mental health and substance use disorder: 1-800-654-3937. Please call the Central Valley Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Call with any concerns. More resources can be found at www.fresnocares.org. We will have more resources on our social media page. Thank you Fresno Cares.
