If you have a moment, read this winning #evcvotes essay titled, "MAKE AMERICA BETTER" by EVC student, Kayla Truong: In the words of former president Barack Obama, You can change our direction on every issue. That’s the power of your vote. Reflecting on the past four years, including the current unprecedented time, a myriad of events have occurred: the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act, the lack of critical attention and safety measures for the COVID-19 pandemic, re...sulting in over 200,000 deaths, the disregard for climate change, women’s reproductive rights and the LGBTQ+ community’s rights, the increase in police brutality and hate crimes, the separation of families at the US-Mexico border, and more. With these devastating situations in mind, it is up to the American people to decide who is capable of creating solutions to these issues in this upcoming 2020 election, for it is the most consequential election of our lifetimes with our rights at stake. A lot has happened in 2020, namely the pandemic, where we had to adapt to wearing masks outside, staying six feet away from others in public, quarantining ourselves, getting tested frequently, and learning remotely. While other countries have implemented lockdowns and mask mandates, our country lags in announcing the pandemic after recognition and downplays it. Unfortunately, it has become a political statement to wear masks. Although we wish for everything to be normal again, it is only viable if we elect the candidate who believes in science. Along with the pandemic, multiple wildfires have spread in California, causing residents to evacuate and poor air quality, as well as the outrageous heat spikes during the summer. The culprit: climate change. We must vote for the candidate who will propose a climate change plan, otherwise, we will cease to exist. To my EVC classmates and colleagues, I urge you to consider the marginalized groups, the uninsured Americans, the deaths of Americans due to the pandemic, our environment, and most importantly, our planet Earth that have been impacted by the failure to address these concerns. Given the current pandemic conditions, it is best to vote by mail, but you can return the ballot in person or to a drop box. Make your voice heard because your vote does matter!
