Slow progress is better than no progress. It’s been over one month since my aunt broke her arm in three places after a devastating car accident. Her doctor wants to take another x-ray in two weeks to see how her bones are healing. During this wait, she was instructed by her doctor to NOT move her shoulder, but she is allowed to bend and straighten her elbow. ... Her shoulder still hurts like hell but pain occurs less often. Even though she still can’t move her shoulder, she was able to walk twice as far as usual this past weekend which promotes recovery of the three fractures in her shoulder, seven rib fractures, fractures at the L4 vertebra and a fractured thumb. Similar to my aunt’s experience, your progress may be slow, but slow progress is better than no progress.

Meniscus Tear Treatments Can I avoid surgery for my meniscus tear? Should I avoid surgery for my meniscus tear? What non-surgical (conservative) treatment options are available to me? What surgical treatment options are available? Should I get steroid injections, PRP injections, or biologics? These are several frequently asked questions by those trying to recover from a meniscus tear.... This infographic focuses on providing a simplified summary of non-surgical (conservative) treatment options for meniscus tears. The majority of the non-surgical focus should be on exercise-based interventions as described in the physical therapy section. Your physical therapist can review these with you and get you started on the right treatment plan to increase your knee range of motion, strength, balance, motor control, gait mechanics, and reduce knee pain. The intervention of each treatment plan will depend on the facts surrounding your injury, but most people will benefit from some degree of conservative treatment for a meniscus tear. For those who need surgery or who already underwent surgery, you’ll still benefit from following this treatment approach to reduce the risk of long-term knee damage and activity limitations. We offer a free support so you can connect and learn what others are doing for their meniscus tear. If you scroll through all the posts in our support group, you’ll see people who have had success and difficultly with both non-surgical and surgical treatment approaches. This group is definitely a valuable resource if you are trying to find what’s best for you. You are able to join the group by clicking on our support group directory here: https://www.evercorelife.com/support-groups/

A close family member was in a major car accident recently. She broke seven ribs, her left arm was broken in four places, the base of her left thumb broke, and she fractured her L4 vertebrae. Her kidneys and liver were damaged from the trauma on her body when the car flipped. ... Thank God she is still alive. I try to call her every day now to support her and show my love to her because she’s managing intense emotional and physical trauma. One of my goals is to reduce her risk of suffering from chronic pain after these recent injuries. This is also my hope for you too. A 2017 systematic review shows that chronic pain is closely associated with these aspects of emotional trauma among others. - Catastrophizing pain (exaggerating the consequences of pain) - Anxiety (worried thoughts) - Depression (persistent sadness and loss of interest) - Fear-avoidance (excessively avoiding daily activities) People will these pain perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs will be more susceptible to chronic pain so it’s important to target these areas to enjoy your life with less pain. I know it’s easier said than done, but you’ll be able to claim victory over your pain with a positive support system around you and the right team of professionals. (Choose your own definition of victory over pain). If you would, please pray for my Aunt because we also believe in the power of prayer. Thank you. We are all in this healing journey together. To your health, Marc (Physical Therapist) Co-founder of Evercore

Turmeric Disclaimer: I would like everyone to know that even though I recommend everyone with any injury to take Active Atoms Turmeric daily (assuming you checked with your doctor), we can not make any claims about what it does for you. The studies have shown that it lowers pain and inflammation and we have seen these results with some customers, but we primarily recommend it as a supplement to promote a healthy inflammatory and immune response in the body. Yesterday, I saw a patient in the clinic for her last physical therapy visit after a total knee replacement. She would get pain and swelling on the outside of her knee by her quads and below the inside of her knee cap whenever she would push it with her exercise program. Her surgeon was surprised about this unusually large area of swelling in her knee and he attempted to drain it once, but the swelling persisted. ... Next, they decided to inject a corticosteroid into her knee to fight the pain, inflammation and swelling. The injection was done about three weeks ago and yesterday she told me she felt absolutely no pain in her knee and the swelling was reduced by about 95%. She stated her knee felt normal again and she was able to do exercises without her knee filling up like a balloon with fluid after exercising. A corticosteroid injection is a power anti-inflammatory medication that can be a great band-aid solution for certain people so you can bridge the gap to finding a better long-term solution. I believe turmeric extract is a better long-term solution than prescription anti-inflammatories like cortisone injections, Ibuprofen or Diclofenac. Prescriptive anti-inflammatories often cause harmful side effects when taken for a long time and turmeric extract (if you take the right one) can promote a healthy inflammation response in your body without many of the negative side effects from medications. If you have been struggling with persistent knee pain from arthritis, then its worth researching the benefits of turmeric extract. If you want to learn how turmeric extract can help you, you can read this article that explains the benefit of turmeric for knee arthritis: https://www.activeatoms.com/how-can-turmeric-help-knee-art/

My eyes filled up with tears when I met P.J. Dixon at a conference a couple of years ago. I like to call people like him a wordsmith. He speaks in a manner that really pierces the mind and heart. P.J. has a rare form of muscular dystrophy and he's spent his entire life in a wheelchair...but not confined.... Like many of you, he manages chronic pain on a daily basis and he does so with a spirit of confidence and swagger. In this epic interview, we get real. We talk about the science of pain then P.J. goes into a powerful mental activity to reduce pain. The psychological components of pain are real. But they can be controlled...just like the mechanical components of pain...and the inflammatory components of pain. You may want to schedule a day to watch this interview. It's longer than my other interviews, but I felt compelled to keep recording. I hope and pray that you will receive a benefit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp7UDv3FcsM

For the last 2 weeks, I was working at an Urgent Care clinic in Chula Vista. (Per diem). All the nurses at that location were amazing. The environment was incredibly caring and respectful. ... Usually, my role is a physical therapist, but they needed additional providers to assist with covid management so I agreed to cover some shifts. Tomorrow I’ll be switching to a different clinic. I had an opportunity to taste a sample of the Urgent Care setting and would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and frontline workers who serve there on a daily basis. San Diego, You are in good hands. I’m sure your local health care heroes are doing a great job too!

Knee feeling stiff? Start improving your knee extension range of motion and quadriceps strength. I know it’s tough at first, especially if you recently had surgery.... Hang in there. Most people get better. The first two exercises help to restore full knee extension. After surgery or injury, you can lose the ability to extend the knee straight and it can feel like there is something stuck inside the joint. If the meniscus is torn, then it’s possible that a portion of the meniscus is obstructing joint motion causing a disruption to your body’s homeostasis. Pain is often a byproduct of the body recognizing some abnormality in joint position, blood flow, or nerve compression. In some cases, your pain feedback system can malfunction resulting in more pain than you would expect. Although it may hurt to straighten your knee, this motion should be gradually restored over time for a healthy and functioning knee joint. *Check with your doctor or physical therapist before doing exercises. Keep learning what’s right for your body. Stay strong and do your best in the recovery process.
