On October 5, Ruth Kluger, Distinguished Professor emerita of German, passed away. She was a prominent scholar of German literature and culture who was widely celebrated for her memoir, weiter leben. Eine Jugend (1992), which she translated from German into English as Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (2001). It chronicles her life as a child in concentration camps during the Holocaust and in occupied Germany after the war, as well as her later life as a U.S. academic. Her memoir is taught in university courses throughout the U.S., including at UC Irvine. Through her writing and teaching, she has touched the lives of many, including countless Anteaters. Gail K. Hart, professor of German, shares Kluger's amazing life and impact below.

Xuxu Song, a Ph.D. candidate in German, received a graduate research fellowship for a year in Germany from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. This fell...owship will help her research on the Athenaeum (1798-1800), a journal of early German romanticism. In her dissertation, Song asks how the journal could be understood differently if we look at it as a work on its own rather than studying its individual contributions. Song says this project will not only offer a new perspective on early German romanticism, but also help us understand how radical the Athenaeum is with its numerous genres and continual production, which will lead us to a different notion of what constitutes a work of art. During the current world crisis, Song believes the spirit of collaboration and collectiveness embraced by the romantics is even more relevant. While COVID-19 has postponed her travels, she is expecting to travel to Germany by April 2021.
