DEFENDING KANT: Late 18th century, Immanuel Kant was coming to the peak of his intellectual output. The Critique of Pure Reason, first published in 1781, was arguably his masterpiece. (I read somewhere someone referring to that book as "the day God spoke German!") I recently acquired an almost 200-page handwritten manuscript of lecture notes from the late 18th century (during Kant's lifetime) in which some unknown professor of philosophy (a contemporary colleague of Kant?) outlined his defense of Kritik der Reinen Vernunft. Beautiful German cursive fills up the pages of arguments, counterarguments, etc. And it closes with a hint at a sequel!
We're all in this together. Please donate to the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund (or a similar fund in your home). Our neighbors need us, and we need each other.
BANNED BOOKS: The Catholic Church, dating back to the 16th c., periodically issued its INDEX OF PROHIBITED BOOKS (the list of books banned for their heretical contents). Just acquired a gorgeous copy of the Index from 1717 (near fine, even with original clasps!). A number of my Radical Enlightenment books are listed, including Spinoza! Nice addition to the Radical Enlightenment shelf.
THE BOOKSELLERS: Super-cool movie coming out in a few weeks. https://booksellersdocumentary.com/
