The next month cycle has been set aside to celebrate our enormously diverse peoples, yet they label it Hispanic heritage month, which to me doesn’t really mean anything. I’m not exactly sure what a Hispanic is. I believe some other person made up the term, but it is a made up term to poor...ly try to describe the many diverse Afro-Indigenous, Spanish and Euro-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples from the Americas; north, central and south and from the Caribbean. Some call it LatinX heritage month, which is what I grew up identifying as, specifically Latino, but I come to realize this is just another made up term. My people have done a tremendous job of owning Latino, Latina and LatinX and of the two terms this will always be something close to my heart, again mainly because of how my peoples have indeed made that stand for something great. I myself have decided to drop made up terms as identifiers and now prefer to use a literal description of the blood running through my veins, which is Afro-Indigenous. Through my mom’s line I have the the blood of African and Kuna and through my dad’s line I have the blood of a tribe whose homeland was in the region we now call Mexico. A month is not long enough to even begin to celebrate who we are and how deep our many contributions go. I celebrate and honor 365!
