Feeling like spring
Just in case you missed this amazing interview with @uptimacoop, here’s a nice little bite sized portion! ...Ariana shared a slice of her world with us. This world was filled with nuance and duality. And, it was anchored by a glowing vision of determination, wisdom, history, and love. Ariana was compelled to start her business because of two important life experiences, the first being her days as a child working in the garden with her grandfather. Ariana’s grandfather sh...owed her how to care for the ground and the things that came up from the ground. At an early age, she was intimately connected with the earth. It was not until she reached adulthood that she could appreciate the significance of that time spent with her elder. When you’re young, you don't know the value until much later. The second experience was working a 9-5 job in corporate America. Like many Black folks in spaces like these, she endured a disorienting and demoralizing onslaught of microaggressions from her white and non-Black counterparts. From repugnant comments about her natural curly hair, to condescending assertions about her attitude. Often, she was perceived as being too aggressive. It was during one office meeting that she remembers feeling like it was about that time to, exit stage left. She loathed being made out to be some caricature of a Black Woman. She calmly strategized her exit plan and escaped. It was these two formative periods, her time learning from her grandfather about nurturing the earth and her unfortunate experience with covert and overt racism, that forged a drive and focus to run a business powered by her love of beauty, family, and Black joy... If you see something is lacking, you have the tools to create it... It’s not going to be easy. She admits. But, you will have people around you that are going to root for you. Lean-in to these people to help you build that legacy. In the final moments of our conversation with Ariana, she affirms, You just have to have the audacity. Have you read our latest newsletter??? Here’s an excerpt - Lately, I have been thinking about and immersing myself in to literature that centers around what freedom looks like, particularly Black economic freedom. Not because I’m fantasizing about this idea, but because through history, we have seen it work and work rather well. We’ve seen multiple examples of thriving Black Wall Streets, little neighborhoods that have been carved out by Black folks just trying to have their ...piece of the American Dream. (This idea of the American Dream is also intriguing to me, but that’s a topic for another day). Just in the past few years, we’ve seen Black businesses open at a rate of about 400%, and a majority of the businesses had to be bootstrapped. Having had to invest my own savings into a business after being turned down by multiple banks continues to highlight the struggles Black businesses face in attempting to get their feet off the ground. I do feel like we are on the verge of creating yet another Black Wall Street. The only difference with this one, it’s not just centered in one neighborhood and not just consisting of brick and mortar. Thanks to the internet, we have been able to network between different cities, states, and countries creating communities all over the world. Many of us have learned from previous generations that banding together to create a piece of utopia where Black folks can live authentically free, even in the midst of inequity, is within reach.... I think I took this wedding bouquet apart like 3-4 times before I liked how it was coming together... Sometimes it’s like that, you have to start from scratch several times before it comes together. Even with the frustration, I had so much fun working with the beautiful colors in this wedding bouquet. Congratulations to the lovely couple and thank you for trusting me #esscentsofflowers

No, we’re not okay. But, we also understand that the fight for protection of black and brown bodies continue. I stand alongside my brothers, sisters and allies willing to make sure that equal justice is achievable for all. Part of that fight is bringing joy and healing to my community through flowers. Recognize your role and execute. We all must be in this together #esscentsofflowers #blacklivesmatter

Today was delivery day and as much as it makes me happy to deliver joy, especially during these times, it was a hard day. Emotional day.... I’m so tired of trying to figure out why this keeps happening. Why are we constantly having to scream at the top of our lungs that BLACK LIVES MATTER??? Constantly looking at my little ones, terrified for their lives... Yeah...today was a hard day... And still...we march on...#BlackLivesMatter
