Ernie’s along with the JL Chamber of Commerce, Sierra Wave, Dan’s Guide Service and many other businesses and individuals in the June Lake Community have started the June Lake Loop Trophy Trout Program. In the coming days the Chamber will have a way to donate on their website and we will share that link when its ready. If you are In the loop most businesses have a bucket to donate. If you’re not in the loop you can mail checks to Ernies at PO Box 36 June Lake, CA. We appreciate all of you so much and wanted to take a proactive approach to enhancing the fishing in our area!

Good afternoon, Mammoth and Eastern Sierra residents and those who love us, It’s Thursday, Sept. 24. We wanted to clarify something that keeps coming up in the ...comments section, especially regarding the issue of the Inyo National Forest being closed another week. There is a lot of controversy over this decision and that is fine. We are not getting into politics and ideology here. What we want to tell you is the on-the-ground facts of what it is like here right now. And that is... it is SMOKY HERE ANYWHERE BETWEEN AT LEAST BISHOP AND LEE VINING. IT IS THICK, DARK, HEAVY SMOKE, WITH ASH COMING DOWN ON OUR CARS, HOMES, LAWNS AND COMING INTO OUR HOUSES. IT IS LIKE THIS MUCH OF THE TIME, DAY AND NIGHT, ESPECIALLY ANYWHERE NEAR MAMMOTH. And we do not mean a little bit of smoke, here, there, around the corner. Over the hill and dale, something you can get away from if you just try. Something you can outwalk, by walking into the backcountry. No. We mean miles of smoke, from Bishop to at least Mammoth, smothering the Eastern Sierra for most of every day, give or take a few days in the past three weeks. The air quality here, if you look at AirNow.gov as most of us do every hour, consistently has MAMMOTH AND OUR PART OF MONO COUNTY AS THE WORST AIR QUALITY IN THE STATE. Over and over again, this is true and we have the screen shots to prove it (we saved them, like the true geeks we are). And, that fact has persisted for several weeks and is likely to persist into at least at least - next week. So, even if the forest was open here, much of the time you would not be happy campers, or hikers. Second, all our trails in the Sierra Nevada range tend to lead mostly west. West means into the high country, toward... you guessed it, the Creek Fire, which is lurking like a big Smaug on the other side of the Sierra crest, about 14 miles away from Mammoth as the crow flies. The fire stretches from a point west and across from the Reds Meadow area to a lint west of and south of Bishop about ten miles. It is, in other words, HUGE. It is 291,000 acres this morning and just as of yesterday, we found out this Creek Fire is the single largest fire in state history. All the other fires that are being quoted as being larger are fires that have grown together to form a big fire. This Creek Fire is just one, single, huge fire. So, if you head toward or over Piute Pass, if you head toward or over Bishop Pass, if you head over McGee, Duck Pass, Mammoth Pass, anywhere on the Inyo up here, you are simply getting closer and closer to it. Hence, the smoke, the danger, the problem and the reason that even if the Inyo was going to open this week, which it is not, you were not going to be allowed to go into the Wilderness areas, the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wildernesses, etc. If you head up over Cottonwood Lakes Basin passes, over Whitney, anywhere down there closer to Lone Pine, you are headed right toward another one of the biggest fires in the state, the SQF Fire, which is burning on the west side of the Sierra crest down there and dumping smoke into the Owens Valley and all the high country around there. Third, we are in for another week of very edgy weather; way above normal temps as Howard Sheckter has noted in comments, and that means our fire is going to get a bit more feisty. We are lucky if that is all it does. That means more smoke, more danger for us living here and for the forest and more care needed not to have a small fire here start by a careless person and as such, drain resources away from other fires. So, that’s where we are here. We cannot wait for it to be over, either. We look forward to seeing you whenever that is. MT

**** UPDATE #3 **** The Forest Service today decided to extend the forest closure until Thursday, 10/8. Unless the closure is lifted earlier, we will re-open t...he 4 campgrounds listed below on Friday, 10/9. We're very sorry to bring this disappointing news again, but maybe we will be able to salvage a bit of the October season for you all to enjoy. **** UPDATE #2 **** Well, the Forest Service management decided to extend the forest closure on the Inyo as well as other forests until 10/1. This means that the earliest re-opening date for our 4 campgrounds is Friday, 10/2. Reservations that begin before 10/2 will be canceled automatically with a full refund. You may want to modify your reservation that begins before 10/2 to begin 10/2 or later. We're very sorry for the closures, but the Forest Management is dealing with many fire issues beyond their control. **** UPDATE #1 **** 100% Reservations has been implemented today, 9/21! Many sites available now for reservations 9/25 - 10/31! ***************** So I guess everyone is wondering, what is happening in the Inyo? Well, currently the Inyo National Forest is closed to all visitors and recreation. But that might change in the near future ... maybe by the end of this week! So the Forest Management will make the decision by Thursday, 9/24, (most likely sooner) whether the conditions are acceptable to re-open the forest. What that means for camping is that we are prepared to open campgrounds on Friday, 9/25, if the current forest closure order is allowed to expire on Thursday, 9/24. Here's the really important part - Inyo Recreation, when the closure is lifted, is going to open 4 campgrounds: New Shady Rest (Mammoth Lakes) Twin Lakes (Mammoth Lakes) Oh Ridge (June Lake) Silver Lake (June Lake) All reservations on other campgrounds (June Lake, Gull Lake, Reversed Creek) will be canceled (sorry! but a full refund!), but the good news is that we have gone to 100% reservations on all 4 open campgrounds to accommodate all who wish to camp with us in this magical time of the year. Of course, this change means there will be no first-come first-serve sites, but starting early this week, many camping reservations will be opened up at these 4 campgrounds. Be sure to check air quality at airnow.gov to be sure of the conditions before leaving for the Inyo. Check back here at this page for updates this week. Any questions, call the office at 760-934-5795.
