Police were complicitnot just complacentin yesterday's attack on the Capitol. Let's compare: 2020: Countless acts of police violence at peaceful protests demanding justice for police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black Americans. 2018: Immediate arrest at the Capitol of women challenging the Supreme Court appointment of Brett Kavanaugh.... 2017: Violent arrests at the Capitol of protesters with disabilities peacefully demanding their right to healthcare. 2016: Violent arrests of Indigenous people defending their land against violence for profit at DAPL protests. The list goes on and on. Yesterday's police alliance with white nationalists isn't surprising. It's a continuation of state systems that have encouraged violence against Black, Indigenous & people of color, LGBTQI+ people, women, and people with disabilities for centuries. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is still $2.13/hour. It started with a Jim Crow-era loophole allowing service industry employers to basically not pay their (mostly Black) workers. Let's end the racist subminimum wage, starting with New York.
