Let's compare: 2020: Countless acts of police violence at peaceful protests demanding justice for police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black Americans. 2018: Immediate arrest at the Capitol of women challenging the Supreme Court appointment of Brett Kavanaugh.... 2017: Violent arrests at the Capitol of protesters with disabilities peacefully demanding their right to healthcare. 2016: Violent arrests of Indigenous people defending their land against violence for profit at DAPL protests. The list goes on and on. Yesterday's police alliance with white nationalists isn't surprising. It's a continuation of state systems that have encouraged violence against Black, Indigenous & people of color, LGBTQI+ people, women, and people with disabilities for centuries. Sexual harassment has increased for restaurant workers since the pandemic began. But they rely on tips to get by, so speaking out against harassment is not always an option. Call on New York Gov. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is still $2.13/hour. It started with a Jim Crow-era loophole allowing service industry employers to basically not pay their (mostly Black) workers. Let's end the racist subminimum wage, starting with New York.

The power of civil court: now the survivors get to decide.

Reminder: The subminimum wage for tipped workers began during Jim Crow because restaurant owners did not want to pay recently emancipated Black people. Little has changed. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is still only $2.13

No one should have to rely on the whims of customers just to survive. Minimum wage is already too low. The subminimum wage is inhumane and must be eliminated! New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he is considering ending the subminimum wage in NY before the end of this year. Let's nudge him in the right direction. Call to express your support!

Tips are down. Sexual harassment is up. New study from One Fair Wage and TimesUp Tipped workers are more vulnerable to sexual harassment because they earn less than minimum wagestanding up to customers often means losing tips they need to simply survive.
