Encinitas Junior Guards

Dear Junior Lifeguard Participants, To help protect the health and safety of the public, staff and Junior Lifeguard participants, the City of Encinitas is regretfully cancelling the July and August sessions of the 2020 Junior Lifeguard Program. Requirements by the County of San Diego Health Order to conduct camps follow a four-pillar approach that includes screening, sanitation, face covering and social distancing. Due to the difficulty to implement the four pillars c...ombined with no City pool or access to surrounding contracted pools for required swim try-outs, the City is cancelling the entire Junior Lifeguard Summer 2020 program. This is consistent with actions by most other San Diego County, Orange County and Southern California agencies concerning their Junior Lifeguard programs. The City of Encinitas looks forward to offering the Junior Lifeguard program next summer 2021. Those families who have already registered their children for the program will receive a full refund within the next several weeks. We understand the impact that this decision will have on our Junior Lifeguard families, and our hope is that all of the families will understand that this decision is being made out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of the many students who spend their summers at the Encinitas Beaches. Update for the 2020 Encinitas City Junior Lifeguard Program and Beach Programs The Encinitas City staff has a long history of placing a priority on the safety and protection of our students and instructors with our Junior Lifeguard and beach programs. It is with this same priority that we approached the discussion regarding the 2020 Junior Lifeguard and beach programs. After much discussion, the City made the difficult decision to cancel the Junior Lifeguard and beach program...s for sessions that begin before July 4, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision aligns with other local and state Junior Lifeguard and beach programs. Participants that have already registered their children for the June programs that are being cancelled will receive a full refund within the upcoming weeks. Registration will remain closed for the time-being. Future summer sessions and registrations will be reviewed again in mid-June 2020 based on new County of San Diego Department of Health orders. City staff will communicate the status once a decision has been made. We understand the impact that these decisions have on participants and families and reiterate that this decision is being made out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of the many students who spend their summers at the Encinitas beaches.

Recreation and Marine Staff are working with local pools to determine alternative dates for additional swim-tests. Summer 2020 Encinitas Junior Lifeguard Session dates: Morning sessions run from 9:00am - 12:00pm; Afternoon sessions run from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Session 1 June 22 July 3 ... Session 2 July 6 July 17 Session 3 July 20 July 31 Session 4 August 3 August 14 REGISTRATION OPENS ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2020 Swim Test All first time Encinitas Junior Lifeguard participants are required to take and pass a swim test administered by the Marine Safety Division. The swim test cannot be waived and referrals from swim coaches or other programs will not be accepted. Registration is required for all swim tests and will only be offered on the following dates/times: March 28 4PM-8PM April 18 4PM-8PM May 9 4PM-8PM Adequately preparing for the swim test is highly encouraged. Most fails occur on the 100 yard swim. Retest can only be taken on offered dates March 28, April 18 and May 9. Participants can only test 2 times per day.
