It’s Poinsettia season! Did you know that for decades, Encinitas was the world’s largest grower of Poinsettias? It’s all thanks to the Ecke farm, that was locat...ed right next to San Diego Botanic Garden! Now we are proud to grow this festive flowering plant all year-round to celebrate our local heritage and an amazing piece of history that you can take home. So, when you start to notice all the Poinsettias around, we hope you will remember to keep the Garden at the center of your year-end giving. For this week’s challenge, test your knowledge of the history of the beautiful Poinsettia plant! Click the link in our bio to sign up to take the quiz, take a screenshot of your results, and post them tagging @sandiegobotanicgarden to be entered to win a prize! __ #sandiegobotanicgarden #sandiegobotanicalgarden #virtualclass #sandiego #encinitas #carlsbad #leucadia #challenge #funathome #fundraising #holidayseason #holidaygames #familyfun #holidayactivities #poinsettias

In Beacons news... Encinitas pledges to fund ‘shovel-ready’ Beacon’s staircase project The Coast News Group ENCINITAS The City Council unanimously voted at ...its latest strategic planning session May 16 to continue support for the Beacon’s Beach staircase project. The plan would end a nearly two-decade dilemma on how to fix the unstable coastal bluff that threatens the current switchback staircase and parking lot atop the coastal bluff at the beach. The city has appeared to clear a significant hurdle in its efforts both the Department of State Parks and the California Coastal Commission appear to be on board with the plan, which was developed last year after the state commission rejected earlier efforts. This project is long-awaited, shovel-ready and most importantly, necessary for public safety, Mayor Catherine Blakespear said. I’m glad that all council members remain committed to this effort. Previously, the city tried to address the erosion on the bluff, which threatens the current staircase and parking lot, by reinforcing the bluff using erodible soil cement https://pjj52.app.goo.gl/ht8XWmFjX1YEvAgaA

This issue will affect nearly every household in our community. It is a crisis that will require bold and courageous decisions. We can not wait for someone else... to fix it. Please be informed and get involved. There are solutions, but they won’t happen robustly until NIMBY-ism is recognized for what it is. See more

Here's a little video I shot, edited and produced regarding a bluff near our house that has been purchased by a Los Angeles developer. They want to over-build o...n this pristine, habitat with native plants and endangered gnatcatchers. I might add a voice over but I actually think I like simplicity of the music and text. Let me know what you think.

here is what happened in the court room: UPDATE 1:30 p.m., April 30, 2018 Vista Superior Court Judge Ronald Frazier has given the city of Encinitas another chan...ce to reach agreement on a housing plan to allow denser housing development. The tentative ruling is a victory for Encinitas, whose residents are determined to maintain the city’s small-town character. Mayor Catherine Blakespear said because the city is working on another housing initiative, the judge postponed a hearing on the suits until after November's election. "The judge was very clear that the initiate process is one of the most important tenets of our democracy," she said, "so he decided to let the voters weight in again." Blakespear said the city is working with residents to agree on a housing plan, known as a "Housing Element," to put on the ballot. She hopes this year, voters will accept it. The judge will hold status hearings in August to see if the city has agreed on a measure to put on the ballot, and again in November, to see what voters decided. "If the Housing Element update is not passed by the voters," the ruling states, "the Court intends to rule on the pending petitions within 30 days of the status conference."
