Porpoising sea lions?!?! Identity crisis or did the pups get into the cookie jar when mom and dad weren’t watching? . @east_meets_west_excursions
1st Blue Whale of the season today and it’s not even April yet aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick! This whale was first sighted off of Three Arch Bay by Capt. Liz on Fastcat @captdaveswhalewatching and Sea Explorer @ocean_institute . It was traveling up the beach at 4kts with dive times ranging between 8 minutes and 20 minutes. Patience paid dividends with some excellent looks at this giant blue whale! . Most years the first blue whale isn’t sighted until the month of May. With some cooler waters and lots of krill, our blue whale season could be an epic one!
This time of year not only brings us both volume and consistency of whale sightings, but also some of the most picturesque backgrounds while enjoying gorgeous gray whales migrate along our coastline. Don’t miss out on our annual gray whale migration! We should be seeing these whales through April when the mothers and their fledgling offspring will be traveling close to the beach. Taken aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick.
3 giant fin whales yesterday afternoon on our way home from an amazing day exploring offshore and Catalina Island up close aboard @east_meets_west_excursions . Countless day making encounters. Thank you @jennifer.renwick.photography and @davidkingham for being adventurous souls willing to put in the time, explore beyond the beaten path and risk for bountiful reward.
This juvenile Mola Mola (ocean sunfish) craved camera time. Taken yesterday on 8hr extended offshore trip with Capt. Nick @east_meets_west_excursions

It certainly was a Merry Christmas with a pair of merry gray whales celebrating with a pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins today aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick. The gray whales and dolphins interacted for over 30 minutes until we had to leave. We were out of gear, sitting still observing the whales when they chose to approach the boat. Exciting!
We get a little excited at times, no filter visually or audibly! Thanks J for video credit

Took some searching but we were rewarded to find the same pair of humpback whales we found at sunset the night before. They remained in range the rest of the day for everyone to enjoy! .

Here's something unexpected. A bit further down the West Coast, a new species of whale may have been discovered. You really never know what you'll encounter when you're out on the water! Take a look at this footage and see for yourself. #CostaMesa #Irvine #WhaleWatching
Pure happiness!
One of the best things about whale watching on the West Coast is the biodiversity of the Pacific Ocean. You never know what you'll encounter on your trip, but it will definitely be an adventure. To give you a hint of what could be out in the water, check out this list of whale fun facts! #NewportBeach #OrangeCounty #WhaleWatching https://www.worldanimalfoundation.com//params/post//whales
Glass conditions, no other boats out, and the offshore bottlenose dolphins were on for our charter from Colorado this morning with Captain Nick
Owner / Operator of Captain Nick's East Meets West Whale, and Dolphin Watching has over 25 years of experience on the water and is a Certified Naturalist, just like all his captains are. To be a Certified California Naturalist is to be part of a diverse community of naturalists to promote stewardship of California's natural resources through education and service. #CertifiedNaturalist
This holiday season will take creativity to make it magical. With the pandemic, our longtime holiday traditions will probably not be happening. Instead of putting a damper on the season, there are exciting and creative things to do as a family. Number 7 on this list is to "Get on the water," and what better water trip could there be aside from whale watching! #WhaleWatching #Newport
Apex predator for a reason!
With East Meets West Whale Watching, you can enjoy our 'no-worries guarantee.' This guarantee allows you peace of mind that you will see whales and/or dolphins on each trip with us. Domino effect with couple hundred common dolphins aboard @east_meets_west_excursions - topped off with nursery pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins. Perfect conditions, excellent sightings, and excited passengers!
2 giant fin whales, 3 humpback whales, and 1000s of common dolphins to start and finish a very memorable day on the water for cherished clients, Jen and Julian. . Nothing quite compares to scouting offshore waters amidst miles of lifeless zones, questioning ones choices of direction, pushing the limits just a few more miles, finding the break and out of seemingly nowhere, ‘WE FOUND THE MOTHERLOAD!!!’ Worked out well for other boats to enjoy too. . The adrenaline of the find is what keeps us in the binoculars for hours, and sharing in the passion with our clients aboard @east_meets_west_excursions is an insatiable desire to supersede expectations with incredible encounters.
LOVE. Incredible pod of stampeding common dolphins from one of our charters this weekend aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Captain Nick!

Exciting, variety filled weekend aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick. Sightings included 2 fin whales, 1 swordfish (in video), a superpod of 2000+ common dolphins, numerous megapods, multiple pods of offshore bottlenose dolphins including the famous Patches, and lots of Pacific White Sided dolphins along the beach. . Side note concerning my passion for swordfish - a highly prized culinary delight has led to overfishing and unsustainable methods for fishing them including long lines and gill nets. Before ordering swordfish on the menu, make sure it was caught responsibly - harpoon and deep drop buoy gear helps maintain the livelihood of commercial fishermen while sustaining and improving this valuable the populations of this valuable resource.
Wait for it! This pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins including the legendary Patches, didn’t have a problem flying during this holiday season.
From enormous blue whales to adorable harbor seals, there are many sea creatures visible from the East Meets West #whalewatching tour! Find out which ones you might spot on your journey here:
California and #NewportBeach have a rich history of sea stories. And now, the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation is putting together an oral history project about locals and the sea! Find out how to get involved here:
We encounter 4 different species of dolphins off of Southern California: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, pacific white sided dolphins, and risso’s dolphins. Rarely do we ever see all 4 on the same trip. Yesterday we had the extreme rarity of sharing the offshore waters of Newport Beach with all 4 species of dolphins achieving the ‘DOLPHIN QUADFECTA’ aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick and J!
No filter fog bank sunset, fuego!!!

What’s not to love about hundreds of dolphins welcoming you in their natural habitat?!?! Taken on recent charter aboard @east_meets_west_excursions with Capt. Nick. . Humpback whales and minke whales all week but these guys stole the show.
Getting ‘mugged’ by a minke whale on our 3p charter yesterday aboard @east_meets_west_excursions . . We are not always the the ones in pursuit of seeing the whales, sometimes they’re just as curious of us, as we are of them.
When everything lines up and it all comes together, the exhilaration and adrenaline of watching these majestic humpback whales in their natural environment is life changing. I will never be the same. I will never look at the ocean the same. I wouldn’t want it any other way. We were able to share this once in a lifetime trip with an amazing family @dental90210 on a recent private tour aboard @east_meets_west_excursions . Thank you J for the photo!

Aguardiente...Firewater! Capt. Nick captured this Monday night on a private fun trip aboard @east_meets_west_excursions
Capt. Nick ran a few crew trips @east_meets_west_excursions this weekend scouting local waters. The ocean is a sacred place to recenter. The wildlife never disappoints and was just a bonus to being on the water again, beautifully quiet, not another boat in sight. It was a weekend filled with multiple humpback whales, offshore bottlenose dolphins, short and long beaked common dolphins, and a very friendly mola mola (ocean sunfish).
All charter and sport boats are tied up in observance of federal and state mandates concerning COVID. This proposal is too much, unnecessary and unlawful. Safer to be offshore - away from everyone.
