Date: October 23, 5:00-6:30pm Event Link: https://sdsurveillance.eventbrite.com San Diego’s government has increasingly been using technology like CityIQ smart streetlights and ShotSpotter to surveil public spaces, often without inviting public debate on the necessity or potential harms of surveillance. Moreover, the lack of public input has led to at least one situation where the surveillance company effectively used City money to subsidize R&D costs -- to the tune of millions of dollars. This has led a coalition of local community groups called TrustSD to demand citizen oversight for all government surveillance done within San Diego, which is up for City Council vote on October 27th.
