As you may have heard, California State Parks has closed all of our museums, visitor centers and campgrounds until further notice. You may enjoy visiting our Parks virtually via Google Trekker: https://www.parks.ca.gov/GoogleTrekker... We also have been posting on Instagram @elkmuseum with photos and archival information. And for teachers and parents looking for educational resources, we recommend our State Parks PORTS program, bringing science and history directly to you from our Parks. http://www.ports.parks.ca.gov/ We wish everyone good health.
We get visitors from all over California, the nation, and the world. Of all those people, we just may enjoy most the Elk people who come home for a look. Over the past twenty five years, the local docents collected family photos and information clippings to assist individuals who reminisce, and families who research the past in Greenwood. Recently, we assisted a flock of Falleris, led by Norma, who found herself on the wall in the Greenwood Gallery, along with various relatives and friends in the albums.
It’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to another of our devoted volunteers, Donald Ross. He leaves behind a sister and two brothers, all of the Ross family who grew up in Elk. They descend from John Simpson Ross, a partner and superintendent of the lumber company that built the building that serves as the museum today. Don spent many hours over the years assisting visitors and telling stories of the old days. Our sympathies go to the entire family. Rest in peace.
This is a sad development.
Welcome to Spring at the Museum! We have new hours this year. We are now open from 8 to 12 in the morning, and 12:30 to 4 in the afternoon. We have an additional Park Aide named Alan in training to help us make sure we can keep our hours as scheduled for the public. Come by and see us!
We are on our winter schedule, December through February, Saturday and Sunday 10 to 4, at the Visitor Center. The Park itself, of course, is open every day!
