For those of you that have not yet heard, Verona is now open. HOWEVER, there are some not so good changes. The fee for launching is now $20.00!! ( unbelievable) and it is no longer a 24hr launch. They open at 4:00AM and they close at 7:00PM. I guess that is the new owners way of welcoming us to his facility!! There are alternatives. Tesdale and Knights Landing are less than half of Verona's fee, and there is another ramp on the West side and a little down stream of Verona that I am trying to get some info on, I'll keep you posted on that.

SALMON UPDATE: We are in the middle of the Late Fall run, if you have given up on salmon for the year, pay attention!! There may not be as many fish in this run, but if you want "ocean fresh" salmon, these guys are BIG and shiny as the bumper on your car, and they fight incredibly hard. You are going to fish all day for one salmon, but honestly folks, its well worth it! Now PAY ATTENTION to what I'm about to tell you!!! Thanks to the hard work of the Norcalguides Assn. they have worked out a deal with Fish and Game to extend the salmon season until the 31st of Dec. PAY ATENTION!!!! This extension is ONLY from the HWY 113 bridge North to the Deshches bridge. As luck would have it, the most productive area to fish is right above the 113 bridge, on anchor, and using ether a K-14 or 15 wrapped plug.

SALMON UPDATE: Sorry for the late report folks, the salmon reports are coming in from all over, including the American. Which isn't to say that there are lots of fish being caught, it's still hit and miss, I'm just getting scattered reports from everywhere. A customer just left and showed me a pic of, what looked like a 30Lb BRIGHT fish caught below Nimbus on a single blade Silverton. The American gets the last run of the year, and it should be that time, but honestly, I thi...nk these are just early arrivals because the reports from the Golden Gate are still coming in strong for this time of year. (0ne fish per rod average). Here's something to think about, . It is legal to fish the mouth of the American for salmon at night. With the salmon moving through that area, and as spooky as they are because of the low water, I think it would be a good bet to tie on a glow in dark K-14 and work the mouth when its nice and quiet, just make sure you flash you K-14. Mid town, Garcia Bend to the Yacht Club has been pretty productive this week with Brads Cut plugs and K-14s being the top two lures. Freeport has been kicking out some salmon on jigs, early morning or late evening. Verona: Verona has been getting better as well, not hot, but a little more consistent. Last week a couple of friends on mine put a 12 and 17 Lb in the boat trolling silvertons which seems to be the top luer in that area. Although salmon will hit through the day, the one constant report that I'm getting, is that the early bite is the best bit of the day. Although old farts like me might consider 9:30 as early, I;m talking first light, early. I have been asked several times through the season about the set-up that I use with a Silverton. I use a three way swivel with about 16" of leader for my luer and 6" of drop for my weight, and at Verona, you don't need anything heavier than 2 ounces. To much lead on your luer will cause your spinner to drag the bottom. The water at Verona right now is only 11.3' so get your gear the he** away from the boat. Troll downstream at between 3 and 3.1mph, and there is a bunch of crap coming down the river, so check your gear constantly! The last piece of advise on Verona is trolling works better than at anchor. Water temp as of 10/11, 64. Good luck, be safe, and I'll get the next report in sooner next week. See more

SALMON UPDATE: I'm starting to get reports of more salmon being caught around Miller Park, Garcia Bend and on the Feather at the Outlet Hole, "the fish are stacking up there both above and below the hole." I have heard of 5-8 fish days on some of the boats. Locally, there are a lot of fish in the system right now, but with water temps in the mid to upper 60s, their pretty lethargic so there a lot of hook-ups, but the fish throws the hook because of a non aggressive strike. Th...e good news is, a fresh school of salmon moved into the Golden Gate, last week. Party boats went from 1/2 - 1 fish per rod, to limits of large salmon to 38 LBS. Those fish are headed this way. It's worth going out, just take some patients with you. Next week expect a better bit, the hot weather will cool and so will the water temps. Silvertrons and Flying Cs are your best bets locally and K-14s on the upper Feather. GOOD LUCK, have fun and be safe! See more

SALMON UPDATE:, originally I wanted to update this page twice a week, well, until last week, the salmon had a different idea! I fished Woodsen Bridge last Monday along with around 20 other boats, and saw a total of 4 salmon caught! It was not for a lack of fish, a fresh school was moving through, we saw more salmon that day, than at any other day this year, but they were all suspended! One problem is water clarity, I was in 18' and could see the bottom, the fish are SPOOKED!... We need some rain....... Locally, I have gotten reports of salmon being caught near Freeport, Garcia Bend, and some at Discovery. What I'm hearing is that plugs with a wrap are getting more fish right now. Verona is kicking out a few salmon, but trollers be ware! Fish and Game has traps set all along the downstream run from the water treatment plant about 3/4 mile!! The water temp is running about 65, but again, it's clear and very shallow. ( clear for this part of the river) I don't want to bore you with the same report over and over again, so I WILL update this report as soon as something happens that will is noteworthy. With that being said, there are salmon being caught, I AM telling my customers that it's definitely worth giving it a go, I just don't want my customers thinking that the fishing is wide open...... Salmon update: The salmon are finally making their way up the river system. Last week saw a marked improvement in the numbers of fish caught in and around Sacramento. Freeport was reporting good numbers as was Garcia Bend and Verona saw improvement as well. Jigs at Freeport, Silvertrons in the rest of the areas mentioned. The Feather river is also picking up. When people as "where is the hot spot" I tell them that there really isn't a "hot spot" because these are school run f...ish, if you are fishing when the school moves in, you'll catch fish, if not, be patient, more fish will come in. This is just the very tip of the run, there will be a lot of salmon heading our way very soon. Keep an eye on the ocean catch numbers, when it slows down there, that means that the fish most likely have left and are heading up the river system. GOODLUCK, have fun, be safe!!! SALMON UPDATE! THE FEATHER RIVER HAS COME UP ALMOST 2' THIS WEEK. VERONA AS OF 6:00AM TODAY WAS AT 14.86' I HAVE NOT GOTTEN A WATER TEMP YET, BUT LAST WEEK IT WAS 73-75 DEGREES, THIS NEW WATER SHOULD COOL THE RIVER DOWN. GIVE THE FISH A WEEK THEN THEY SHOULD START TO SHOW IN PRETTY GOOD NUMBERS. THIS YEAR WE HAVE THE BEST RETURN OF KING SALMON IN 8 YEARS, AND THEY ARE HEADING THIS WAY!!!!!
