What it means when you marry a rancher.... When you marry a rancher you marry a lot of things...like endless amounts of dried cow S*&% on EVERYTHING he owns (an...d a good portion of what you own). You marry long days and long nights, often back to back during calving or the long, hot dry nights of August watching for fires during heat lightening. You become the spouse of harsh spring storms when you spend all night bringing calves in the house to keep them warm and the endless ahem, interesting things your dog will eat and drag into the yard/house. You marry traditions that make you feel warm and fuzzy and traditions that make you want to scream. You marry a man that is often more in tune with cow number 144 (or whatever his favorite is) than he is with discussing his own feelings. You marry a man whose hands will never be completely clean and who will always prefer his gross, sweaty old cowboy hat to a neatly combed bare head and a Coors to anything fancier. Some days you WILL question if he loves you or those cows more. You marry a lot of things that will drive you CRAZY. But you also marry a man with an incomparable love for animals, the land and God. You marry a man who will sacrifice anything and everything for those he loves. You marry a man who values and respects women as a partner, helpmate and equal. You get old dirty trucks, "barn cleaning" parties and dancing in the kitchen in your stocking feet. The bonding experience of 11pm heifer checks and watching this strong, tough man deal with the heartbreak of losing a cow or calf. You will fall in love with him all over again when he takes your children by the hand and teaches them about hard work. You marry both the romanticized version of the west and the hard, every day lifestyle that is ranching. But in the end, you realize that there is no line that separates who he is from what he does. You marry a rancher, not a man who ranches. You don't marry a man who happens to run cattle, or fix fence or ride horses, you marry a rancher who wouldn't know who he is without those things. He might leave the ranch to support his family for a time, but he will always come back. For better or worse, in sickness and health you marry the smell of sage on a wet spring morning and dust on a hot dry day. You marry harsh winter wind and hot black coffee from a thermos. You marry noisy cattle, horse and dog hair on everything, broken windmills and more stars at night than you can count. Thanks to my rancher for letting me be a part of his world.

It's time to stop portraying farmers as dirty, lazy, and stupid, Mike Rowe says. Credit: ATTN:
