El Dorado High School El Dorado High School graduate Alleah Schlag is enrolled at California State University, Sacramento majoring in biology. The fact that Sac State is close to home and it has a great biology program made her college of choice an easy decision. I chose biology to be my major as I have always loved to learn about biology and it is an overall good degree to have because it doesn’t limit me to just one option later on in life, she said.... Enterprising students are refusing to let COVID-19 keep them down. Oak Ridge High School junior Luke Stewart is one athlete who came up with a creative solution to keep sports alive, in spite of the virus’ best efforts. Stewart recently spearheaded the inaugural Trojans Breaking Records event where eight Oak Ridge athletes competed to break school records, combining the event with a fundraising effort. I wanted to do something to make a positive difference in our community,... said Stewart. No sports were scheduled for fall 2020 and as a basketball and track athlete, I still wanted to compete. As team sports were temporarily tabled, he brainstormed a way that individuals could compete against themselves while still adhering to social-distancing rules. I learned our school record for push-ups was 84 and I thought I could beat that so I came up with the idea to have Oak Ridge athletes compete to break or to set new records for our school. Adding fundraising helped the school and community raise money that was needed with no gate admissions at school events, he said, presenting the concept to the Oak Ridge High School administration. He then established the Trojan Pride Sports Marketing’s Sports Broadcasting Team of which Stewart is now vice president. Tyler Burns wants to one up his dad. Having graduated from Oak Ridge High School this past spring, Tyler recently signed a letter of intent to pole vault for University of California, Berkeley, where his dad was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame. Brent Burns would like nothing better. A three-time Pac-10 champion in pole vault, Brent still holds the school record. Now Tyler is ready to make his own mark. A latecomer to the sport, Tyler actually tried pole vaulting o...nce when only 4 years old. It didn’t take. For years, soccer dominated his attention while he pole vaulted intermittently. When I was a sophomore I started taking it a little more seriously, Tyler said. I ended up winning league finals that year and after that happened, I decided I didn’t want to do any other sport. Tyler insists his decision to follow in his dad’s footsteps was his own. We grew up in a track family but I don’t think he cared about what event I did, he said. He snuck in a rope swing at our house and we have a nice trampoline so he might have been planning for it, but he didn’t push me in that direction. I just kind of found my way there on my own. Good Evening El Dorado Union High School District Parents and Guardians, I hope this email finds you all doing well and staying safe. Recently, we’ve seen a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases across El Dorado County. Additionally, typical cold and flu symptoms, many of which are similar to the symptoms of COVID-19, have required our teachers and staff members to quarantine. We desperately want to continue providing in-person instruction to our students, but staf...f absences due to quarantine, which are required by public health department guidelines, could prove challenging. We’ve already seen several schools in the region revert to full distance learning due to substitute shortages. In order to reduce the likelihood that one or more of our schools are forced to return to distance learning, we are calling on our community for help. We are encouraging qualified applicants to join the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) substitute teacher pool. This substitute pool is what our District uses to fill our substitute needs. In order to qualify to become a substitute teacher, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree and pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Currently, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is allowing CBEST waivers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To start the application process: Click on the link here, https://www.edjoin.org/edcoe, to access the EDCOE page of the EdJoin employment website. Look for the Guest Teacher, Non-Full Credential posting and submit an application. Next, email Beth Reynolds, EDCOE substitute systems specialist, at [email protected] to find out the next steps in the process. The staff at EDCOE can also help you with the application process for a 30-day substitute teaching credential. Thanks in advance for your consideration, and we look forward to partnering with you in support of our children!
