In craniothoracic diaphragm soma therapy training we were reminded that there are 2 very important muscles that the connect the anterior fascial chain with the posterior fascial chain. They are: 1 PSOAS Muscles 2 OMOHYOID Muscles... Why and how: the PSOAS muscles run posterior to anterior, from back to front and the omohyoid muscle runs anterior to posterior, front to back! The PSOAS runs from T12 all the way down the lumbar spine crossing multiple joints of the spine and pelvis and inserts on the inner upper femur bone. The OMOHYOID bone runs from the hyoid bone in the throat to the scapula/shoulder blade spanning the cervical spine & over rib 1. This one runs from front to back. Part of anterior fascial chain is the abdomen, the area between the OMOHYOID bone and the PSOAS muscles. In order to truly see the space elongate in the ELDOA you need an ultrasound probe that will penetrate deep enough and have an amazing ultrasound tech who knows what they are seeing and how to measure! So, we used a vaginal probe, multiple takes and froze the screen when we found maximum tension! It’s super subtle but it’s there. Look where the arrow says look here it’s really fast but you can see L4 move away from L5 for a very short second!... We want to confirm the space just behind the spinal column and just in front of the spinous process where the facet joints live! Bone shows up back and soft tissue show up gray and whitish depending on the density of the tissue. We will keep practicing this as this was our first time playing around! We ELDOA to create space between our facet joints and between the body of the vertebrae to elevate pressure off our nerves, intervertebral disc and blood vessels. MODERNA COVID 19 vaccine #1 To vaccinate or not to vaccinate... this seems to be the question! The answer is EXTREMELY PERSONAL and NO ONES BUSINESS but your own!... My decision: 1 because I wanted to! 2 because I am exposed to patients with Covid. 3 because I am tired of many people not interested in wearing a mask or wearing it properly. 4 because I want to keep my friends, family, clients and patients safe from me, especially for those who cannot get vaccinated because of their compromised health! 5 BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CAUSING ANY HARM TO ANYONE! 7 I want to travel, and hug my friends and family and clients and patients! POST VACCINATION SYMPTOMS: my arm is really sore, like really sore, but nothing that Tylenol can’t handle! I am tired, but I have been tired for the last 3 years! So vaccinated related unsure! But, my body is having an appropriate immune response so I should be tired! MODERNA VACCINATION FACTS: I am 70% protected from Covid after 7 days. I need a booster shot 4 weeks from my first shot. I will still be a vector of Covid if exposed... meaning I will not get Covid, but I can still spread it for 24 hours while my immune system kills the virus. - THIS IS IMPORTANT! ELDOA FOR THE LUMBAR SPINE In this class we: warm-up activate and myofascially stretch the PSOAS muscle.... Myofascially stretch the Quadratus Lumborum. Perform global postural stretches for the fascial layers along the lumbar spine between the 12th ribs and top the hip bones. globally postural stretch the SI joint. ELDOA the vertebrae of the lumbar spine The lumbar spine is an area of weakness if we are not actively strengthening it! GENTLE REALITY CHECK: Postural changes have varying effects on our lumbar disc pressure at various positions. Lying down: 25 kg (55lbs). Lying on your side: 75 kg (165lbs). Standing: 100 kg (220lbs). Forward gravity line (leaning forward on the ball of you foot): 150 kg (330lbs). Holding a weight and leaning forward in the standing position: 220 kg (485lbs). A non-load bearing position of sitting upright: 140kg (308lbs). Leaning forward from this position: 185 kg (407lbs). Finally, the highest amount of pressure that is placed on the disc of the lumbar spine occurs when you are in the seated position and leaning forward, while bearing weight: 275 kg (606lbs). Now, factor in degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, stenosis, disc bulge or protrusion/herniation etc... any amounts of increased pressure could be disastrous in a poor gravity line. Did you know long periods of sitting on the front of your sit bones causes your pelvis to tilt forward shortening the hip flexor muscles. This results in an over-arching of the lower back compressing there lumbar spine and a stomach that pooches forward. Do you have a pooch of your abdomen? Do you wish you didn’t? Do have low back pain and figure it is normal? FYI: back pain in NEVER normal!... Optimal pelvic tilt is a neural pelvis meaning it does not tilt forward nor backwards. It is straight up and down! You can estimate your own tilt by putting your back against the wall and measuring the space between the small of you back and the wall. A hand is the ideal amount of space. Significantly more or less is likely problematic. If you fall outside of this range you will want to strengthen your lower abdominal muscles, hamstring and gluts , and release the tension in your tight quadricep and PSOAS muscles! POOR POSTURE AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE If left untreated, poor posture causes changes in the spine alignment leading to: 1 Blood vessel constriction resulting in blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, the culprits of heart attacks and strokes. 2Increase risk of developing cardiovascular disease.... 3 Constriction of the pericardial sac affecting electrical conduction causing heart arrhythmias. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? Here’s a little lessen on anatomy and fascia (aka, connective tissue). Picture this. A massive spiderweb containing all your organs, blood vessels, lymph vessels, muscles, bones, fat and nerves. Now imagine there is a constriction in 1 little area. Posture and the Breath Poor Posture can make it harder to breathe. Breathing requires your diaphragm to have enough room in the thoracic and abdominal cavity to properly contract and release. Your ability to breathe optimally is boosted when your body is tall and lengthened in proper alignment. Without length the diaphragm cannot fill the lungs fully thus oxygen exchange becomes limited. Less oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange = less oxygen in the blood stream for your vital ...organs and your BRAIN When the brain receives less oxygen it panics and forces your to breath faster shallower breaths, which triggers your fight or flight stress response. This causes a chronic low level of anxiety all day long. In reality, we should slow down and take long deep breaths to calm the brain and active our rest and repair nervous system.
