Hillside Fire Danger Meeting EC City Council Monday, September 17th at 7 PM. City Hall The Eucalyptus groves in the Hillside Nature Area and other parts of it have grown to be thicker and more dangerous than ever. It is way past time to mitigate the fire danger.... A group of El Cerrito residents have organized to address the city council and see the project through until something is done. They will be at the EC City council meeting speaking during the public comment portion which occurs at the start of the meeting. The meeting is this coming Monday, September 17th at 7 PM. If you have any concerns at all about fire danger in any parts of EC, please attend this meeting and speak. You will be allotted 3 minutes. We need the council to know that there are many people concerned about fire danger here in El Cerrito. Hope to see many of you there See more

Fun volunteer opportunity, kids and adults! Are you looking for some vigorous but not too vigorous exercise that will benefit your community?Would you like to share some out of door volunteering with your kids? Would you like to meet some of the active people who make El Cerrito such a great place? Later this winter Trail Trekkers will be working with the city to install way-finding signs throughout the Hillside Natural Area. Once the dates are set we will organize a series o...f work parties. Work will involve digging holes, setting concrete, and installing posts that will support the signs, making sure the posts are level, and helping select the best locations for each sign. The large gateway signs, with maps and trail information, will be installed by professionals. Volunteers will set up the simpler, single-post signs. For years, the city’s 100-acre Hillside Natural Area has lacked all but the most rudimentary entry signs. As a result many people find it a mysterious place. Yet it is one of the beauty spots of the East Bay, with oak forests, chaparral, creeks, and stunning views. Signage will make it much easier for people to find their way and will help more people get out into this natural area in the midst of our city. Trekkers has been working since 2013 to establish signs, applying for and receiving a technical assistance grant from the Natural Park Service through its Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. Park rangers Stephen Bowes and Patrick Johnston were our primary partners. Stephen developed the map of all of the city’s trails that made possible the development of the sign plan. Patrick developed the sign plan and designed the signs. To volunteer, contact Dave Weinstein at [email protected].
