Yes, the new generation Corvette has been unveiled. Yes, there's a V8 in the middle of the car. Yes, it's... surprisingly affordable?... Last night was the long awaited unveiling of the next generation Corvette. We all expected the mid-engine layout, as well as GM keeping the fifth generation smallblock V8 with pushrods, but given the leaks and promises nobody expected the starting price to be so low. Here are the highlights: - Starting price under $60,000 - 495hp, 470 lbs-ft of torque from the naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V8 with a proper drysump - Available Z51 handling, cooling and braking upgrade package, as is tradition for new generation Corvettes - Sub-3 second 0-60 time for the Z51 optioned cars - No more manual; only the 8 speed double-clutch transmission sourced from Tremec - No more leaf springs; coilovers all around with an optional GPS assisted nose-lift - No more chrome wheels - More available interior room than the C7, which had long been chided for being too snug - Still wears a detachable targa top - Frunk and trunk, with room to store the detachable top in the trunk -- or the mandatory two golfbags In short, what we got was a naturally aspirated V8, mid-engine car, with 495hp, and enough room for an extra set of weekend bags, at the price of a decently option pickup truck. Of course, time will tell if the quality and handling will allow the new Corvette to soar as high as GM wanted everybody to think during the launch intro, but safe to say they came out swinging against Porsche, Toyota, and all the other manufacturers. Let's see if they can follow up on their promises. All things considered, it's looking like a good year to be a car enthusiast.
