UCSD EDS and Sony have a new collaboration called KOOV Academy aiming to excite and engage students in STEM learning through fun learning activities. It collaborates with educators in implementing such engaging KOOV lessons via teacher training, co-designing lessons, and providing in-class support in the virtual classrooms that they offer. The program’s goal is to support classrooms serving underprivileged populations of students in San Diego through remote lessons to promote STEM and Computer Science learning (STREAM)for their students. https://www.prnewswire.com//sony-electronics-launches-koov

Congratulations to Caren Holtzman and many others on their contributions to this wonderful project highlighting the vibrant presence and important contributions of refugees in the San Diego community. Refugee San Diego is designed to be a digital repository for information and resources of interest to refugees, refugee-run and refugee-serving organizations; educators, researchers and students; and politicians, community leaders and activists. We invite members of the San Diego community to visit this website, and especially those from refugee backgrounds, to help build this repository by uploading materialsartwork, essays, reports, photos, short stories, poetryabout refugee life directly to the website.

Thanks to Amy Vatne Bintliff and all the teachers (and our UCSD student research team) who helped with this important research. Teachers are deeply affected by the pandemic and remote learning. More publications are forthcoming, but this one is especially relevant as school starts. https://www.psychologytoday.com//it-impacted-me-profoundly

A huge congratulations to 3 of our Ph.D. Candidates, Katherine Garcia, Jessica Miguel and Ramon Stephens, who are UC San Diego recipients of the inaugural University of California President’s Pre-Professoriate Fellowship (PPPF). These students’ outstanding academic achievements, commitment to advancing issues of equity and inclusion, and interest in pursuing a career in the professoriate make them ideal Fellows. We are honored to support all their work. The UC Office of the President launched the PPPF as part of its UC-Hispanic Serving Institutions Doctoral Diversity Initiative (UC-HSI DDI) on September 30, 2019. The initiative aims to enhance faculty diversity and pathways to the professoriate for underrepresented students from California Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Congratulations Jeff Lampert, Secondary/M.Ed Teacher Candidate, who was just awarded the prestigious Knowles Teaching Fellowship! This is a 5-year program that provides professional development, financial resources, and ongoing mentorship for new science and math teachers who demonstrate excellence and leadership in their respective disciplines. Only 35 fellowships are awarded across the nation annually, and to date, Jeff is one of only 5 UCSD EDS STEM teacher candidates t...o ever receive this award. Jeff participated in a rigorous application process which included a written submission, a phone interview, as well as a full in-person weekend interview in Philadelphia with other teachers. Congratulations on this wonderful award! This is a huge honor, and we know Jeff will be a true asset to this group of educators and will continue to improve STEM education for all youth served.
