Sometimes I build cars as well as bikes! This was a pedal car that was rented by tourists down by the beach here. I have a customer who wanted one, but electrified. This car presented a number of challenges, not t5he least of which was removing several coats of paint and lots of rust. These originally have only a coaster brake. As I had no intention of building it to be slow, I knew better braking was a priority. I installed dual hydraulic disc brakes up front. This was trick...ey because wheels with a provision to mount disks in this size don't exist. The car originally had a round steering wheel which leaves no place to mount a brake lever (nor a throttle for that matter). I fabricated a custom steering wheel to do the job. When designed this car had neutral caster in the front alignment. Acceptable at pedal speeds, but uncontrollable with its new muscle. I had to cut and sleeve the front axle so I could dial in some caster to keep it going straight. I used a rickshaw motor, which gets it up to over 30Mph. A 45 amp controller and 54.6V, 45 Amp/Hr battery rounds out the package. With only 1 rear wheel driven it's still a little scary if you mash the throttle from a standstill, but it is lots of fun to drive.

This is the fastest bike I have built to date. As customers are always anxious to get their bikes as quickly as possible, I don’t get time with the finished bikes to record total performance specs. When this bike accelerates you had better have your weight shifted up over the handlebars, or it will flip you over backwards. Now this controller has a soft start, but even from the soft rolling start, when the power kicks in it can wheelie over backwards! The acceleration is tre...mendous, now I don’t have hard data, but from a subjective point of view I believe this will accelerate harder than almost any street car, up to about 40 Mph I think it’s pretty much in super bike (like a ninja) territory. The power train consists of a MXUS 3T, V3 Turbo hub motor. A Yuan King 150 amp Bluetooth programmable controller, LG MH1 18650 cells in a 8P, 20S configuration for 84 volts and 25.6 Amp/Hr or 1,895 Watt/Hrs. It has a BMS rated for 100 Amps continuous. The BMS has LED's which light as each parallel group reaches full charge. There is a window in the battery case to monitor this function. The battery level meter is a relatively new style which rather than displaying voltage, reads percent of charge. This makes monitoring your battery far simpler and reduces "range anxiety". Custom fabrication included the aluminum battery case, milling some fins down to fit the controller between the cranks, a clamp to hold wiring in place, 3/8 steel, clamping dropout reinforcements. The rear wheel was spoked with a 2 cross pattern for added strength. Using a tachometer I clocked this bike at 57 Mph on the test stand, but that was with no overdrive programmed in. With all the torque that this bike has I’m certain higher speeds are attainable. The bike has an extremely smooth ride, and is nearly silent. This is not a sine wave controller, but I have ridden bikes that do have sine wave controllers which aren’t as smooth or as quiet as this one. As impressive as this bike is (at least to me) Mxus has now released an 5,000 watt motor, and I hope to build a bike utilizing one of these in the near future. See more
