When Darkness Reigns: 2020 Election Sermon Mini-Series As the 2020 November election approaches, we have felt and seen a noticeable rise in division, fear, and anxiety in our national countenance. The right and the left oppose each other with vitriol, and our leaders have stoked the fires with incendiary comments and actions. Even now, there is rising tension as we brace for a possible contested election outcome an...d increased activity of militia groups within our borders. As we look on in disbelief that this could happen in 21st century America, we consider how God might be moving in the darkness. Historic times of extreme difficulty are not foreign to the people of God. Our faith reminds us that we find the crucified Christ when life becomes most difficult. In the gospel narratives we read of one such moment in the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Christ story plunges into suspense and despair in these hours before Jesus’ arrest. Jesus himself identifies this as an hour when darkness reigns. The disciples are gathered understandably confused, triggered, and fearful. Their temptations are our temptations. We can learn much from how they respond, and the example of Jesus in this crucible moment.
