Celebrating Women in Parks: Vice President Kamala Harris. On the final day of Women's History Month, read how in 2013, then-Attorney General Kamala Harris strongly advocated to stop the sale of a 3.89 acre parcel of land in Alameda to a private developer, ensuring that the property became part of Crown Memorial State Beach. Congratulations to Bay Area native Kamala Harris on her groundbreaking achievement of becoming our first woman Vice President!

Sobrante Ridge Botanic Regional Preserve protects the habitat of extremely rare Alameda Manzanita as well as other indigenous plant and animal species. Its trail system leads to ridge-top vistas of San Pablo and Richmond Bays, Mt. Diablo, and Mt. Tamalpais. Wildlife abounds in the preserve's varied habitats of oak and bay woodland, coyote brush scrub, miniature "forest" of Alameda Manzanita and open grassland. Coyote stalk gophers in the tall grass; deer bed down by day in th...e tall tickets; salamanders sleep all summer buried in the woods; and golden eagles soar high above the ridge, scanning for prey. Park activities include hiking, dog walking, picnics, bird watching, bicycling on certain trails, and naturalist programs. See you in your Regional Parks. #EBRPD #SobranteRidgeBotanicRegionalPreserve #Manzanita #Hiking #Birdwatching #Biking #Naturestudy #Explore By: Paul Salemme @findyourtrail See more

The Ladybird has no clothes... Just kidding! This ladybird is fully dressed even though she has no spots. Her full name is Cycloneda sanguinea and she is native... to California. Like many of her 6,000 cousins world-wide, this beetle loves to munch on garden pests like aphids and scale insects. While we don't recommend purchasing ladybirds, we do advise attracting them to your green spaces by leaving leaf litter, avoiding pesticides, and learning to recognize their crocodile-looking larvae... For more information on attracting ladybirds to your yard, please check out: https://www.gardenmyths.com/buy-ladybugs-garden/

Happy Veterans Day! Together #WeAreEBRPD, honoring veterans like Jenn W, Exhibit Designer for the Park District. Jenn started in November 2016 after searching for a job in the Park District where she could use her skills and be outdoors. Her service as a US Navy Seabee Engineering Aid helped prepare her for this career in multiple ways, with experience surveying, drafting, planning, and executing large construction projects all over the world. The job of Exhibit Designer was a perfect fit for her skillset and she plans to continue working on many future creative design projects for the Park District.

Together #WeAreEBRPD, honoring Park District Veterans like Carlos, Regional Trails Supervisor for East County Trails. Carlos is a veteran of both the Army and Coast Guard Reserve, and currently a Reservist with the Coast Guard assigned to a small boat station on the Sacramento Delta (his most enjoyable military assignment to date). Carlos started his career in the Park District as a student laborer at Tilden in 1996 and became a ranger at Martinez Shoreline in 2004. Working outdoors in all types of weather environments and with a diverse workforce was one of the important ways his military service prepared him for a Park District career.
