Earth Arts Studio will remain open after Margaret Hudson's passing as a partnership between the Hudson family (represented by Margaret's grandson Soren) and Margaret's good friend Lydia Buciok. Lydia was an artist in the Soviet Union before she fled persecution and came to America, where she began working with Margaret Hudson in the 1980's. Under Lydia's direction, a small team of experienced sculptors at Earth Arts Studio will continue to hand-sculpt Margaret Hudson's classic designs from her signature rich brown clay. Rumors have circulated that we're going to close, so please help share the word (and this post)!

The California Assembly adjourned in memory of Margaret Hudson with some kind words from Fresno and Tulare Representative Jim Patterson.

Fresno-born artist, Margaret (Metzler) Hudson, passed away on Sunday, February 2nd at the age of 93. The same creative energy and loving spirit that she shared with so many Fresnans remained very much alive through several years of slowly declining health. Her three sons and four grandchildren greatly appreciate all the love shown to Margaret over the years by this community, her faithful friends, co-workers at Earth Arts Studio, and devoted caregivers at Victoria’s Care Home. As she neared the end of life, Margaret wanted her family to tell people: ..I love them very much.

Sometimes when life is just too much I retreat to my garden with shovel or hoe... and begin to dig row after row or pick a worm-chomped or withered rose to draw or scribble and rage page after page and in that process discover in myself a rich interior in the wounded flower's belly the seeds of transformation of new growth even ecstasy!

"A single rose is a celebration of that wonder and mystery, beauty and fragility, the transient nature of life as experienced in a rose" Margaret Hudson's experience with breast cancer led her to explore the beauty and fragility of life in her art. After her breast cancer diagnosis in 1992 Margaret was inspired by roses in her garden, drawing them on butcher paper with pastels, using impermanent materials to reflect the fragility of the flowers. In honor of breast cancer awareness month we are holding a showing of some of Margaret's pieces in this style, Thursday from noon to 8pm at Top Drawer (6045 N Palm). We will also be selling Margaret's classic bears with a pink ribbon to raise money for Art of Life.
