Here she reflects on her journey from novice trainee to expert cataract and refractive surgeon using the latest technology to help patients achieve freedom from glasses: A few weeks ago after returning from maternity leave, I OFFICIALLY IMPLANTED MY 500TH PANOPTIX TRIFOCAL LENS (@alconlife ) FOR CATARACT SURGERY! I was one of... the first (and youngest) surgeons in the country to implant the PanOptix after FDA approval last fall (photo ). It’s the first and only trifocal intraocular lens available in the U.S. for cataract patients who want the full range of vision from near to intermediate to far (without glasses!) ... Perhaps this means so much to me because I still remember when I was a first year ophthalmology resident just learning the basics of cataract surgery. Every single step back then was. SUCH. AN. OBSTACLE. A basic 10-minute surgery took over 1 hour. Those embarrassing tremors magnified 100x under the operating microscope for every attending to see. Many sleepless nights worrying about those early surgical outcomes. ... We’ve all been there. It’s hard to believe that now, thousands of cases later, I have the honor of performing the most advanced form of refractive surgery available (where every millimeter and 0.25 diopter matters) to give my patients the best vision possible. I’ve since given talks about my PanOptix experience (swipe ) and am also preparing to publish my results. ... Dr. Zhu talks about her experience as one of the first surgeons in the country to implant the new Vivity Alcon intraocular lens the latest technology option for reducing patients’ need for computer and reading glasses . Last week, I had the early privilege of implanting my first batch of Vivity lenses by Alcon the first of its kind, non-diffractive, extended range of vision IOL. I used it in a handful of patients who were not candidates for multifocal technology and was pleased to find many reading J2 the next day. The central ring is so subtle it looks like a monofocal!
